Blueth Mendoza's POV
"Hey, kid? You really want to work for us?"
I turned around and I saw the lady standing at the door, with her cat rubbing her fur against her legs.
"Well, I really want to have a job, just before summer ends so I can get to do something and earn a few to help my parents. So, yes, I really want to work for you."
The lady smiled as she scratched her head. "Well, in that case, you're hired."
Happiness returned to my face and a smile started forming on my lips. "Really? You really mean it?"
"Yeah, well, I wouldn't have hired you without Cathy talking me into it. So, if you have someone to thank, it's her you should be thanking."
"Wait, you talk to your cat?"
"Talk to her? Are you kidding? I even fight with her. But yes, I talk to her. Well, Cathy and I are the only ones living in this place, so it's hard not to talk to her. You can call me weird for talking to a cat, but that won't stop me from talking to Cathy here."
"Awe, did little kitty Cathy made the old lady hire me?" I said as I picked up Cathy and started cuddling her.
"Old lady? Hold on a minute kid. If you're going to work for me, we need to establish some ground rules. The first rule of business, don't call me an old lady, I have a name. The second rule of business, uhh, you, hmm, well, there's only one rule for now as I haven't made rules yet. But you can expect the rules to come your way tomorrow. Understand?"
"Yes ma'am! But, a question."
"Go on."
"How can I not break rule number one if you haven't told me your name yet?"
"Oh, I haven't introduced myself yet? Huh, I thought I did. Well, guess an introduction is needed, although it is already late for that, it is needed nonetheless. Listen carefully kid as I'm only going to introduce myself just once. My name is Valerie Books and the cat you are holding there is Cathy."
After she introduced herself and Cathy, there was a pause, a long pause at that. I waited for her to continue, not saying anything because I don't want to interrupt her introduction. I don't want to be rude because I am not rude. I kept waiting but she just stopped talking as she stared at me. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and I broke the silence forming around us when I asked a question.
"That's it?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I was kind of hoping that there is a bit more to your introduction. Like, how old are you, what is your nickname, your hobbies, your friends, your past time and something else which can help me in getting to know you a little bit better?"
"Hold your horses, kid. To get to know me better, you need to earn my trust. I need to know if I can trust you with those kinds of information about me. So, in the meantime, while I still don't trust you yet, that's all you're getting from me."
"Well, you do have a point. You can't just give out information about yourself to people you just met, you just met them and suddenly you are giving them unnecessary information about yourself so, that's a big no."
"You are right there kiddo, but you can call me by my nickname, Val."
"Val?"
"Yes, Val. But since you are working for me, you need to make it formal, call me Ms. Val."
"Ms. Val? Okay, got it."
"Okay, now that we are done with my introduction, it's time for yours. Tell me, what's your name?"
"Oh, well, my name is Blueth Mendoza." I said as I looked at Ms. Val.
"And?" She asked as she looked back at me.
"And what?"
"Anything else you want to clarify on your introduction?"
"Nope, it's like you said, to get to know me better, you need to earn my trust. I need to know if I can trust you with those kinds of information about me." Two can play that game, Ms. Val! I just hope that she won't fire me right off the bat after saying that.
Ms. Val just froze and gave me this stare, a stare filled with irritation. Oh boy, did I mess up already? Am I going to get fired already? And I haven't even started working!
Ms. Valerie raised her hand as she kept staring at me with this irritated expression. Here it comes Blueth, the words which you don't want to hear. I closed my eyes as Ms. Valerie lowered her hands, about to point towards the door.
"You got wits kiddo. Using the sentence I said against me, I like that." Ms. Val said as she patted me on my shoulder.
I opened my eyes with confusion mixed in them. She didn't fire me? I looked at Ms. Val and she was smiling at me.
I smiled back at her while the fear inside of me started leaving my body. I thought that I was going to lose the job I haven't even got the chance to get started.
"So, I'm going to shut my lips and won't let any information about me leave my mouth until I know that I can trust you with those kinds of information about me."
"Oh yeah? What kind of information?" Ms. Val said as she started walking towards the counter, putting away the big book she placed on top of it.
"Well, you know, private information."
"Why would I ask you about your private information? Would I benefit from them?"
"Well, I don't know, but you might ask me about my privacy, which in any case even if I already trust you, I won't give them to you because they are private matters."
"Listen, kid? Unless your 'private matters' can bring me a million dollars, I won't ask you about them and I won't bother getting them out of you."
"Well, then that makes my job of not spoiling my private information matters a whole lot easier then."
"Well, since you'll be working here now, I guess I should give you a tour around the place you'll be working in then. Follow me, kiddo." Ms. Val said as she went inside the back room with Cathy following her.
I started jumping with excitement, trying my best not to make a commotion. This is it Blueth! You officially now have a job!
"Hey Blueth, you coming or what? I can fire you if you won't follow me you know."
"Oh right, I'm coming Ms. Val!" I said as I started running towards the back room. This marks my first day of employment! Proofreader Blueth is now ready to help!
