Chapter Thirty Nine

Blueth Mendoza's POV

"Note to self. Blueth? Before you do any proofreading on a book, make sure to check what genre it is, okay?"

I kept looking around my surroundings as I felt like someone's watching me, monitoring my every move. This book gives me the chills. Why must I proofread this one when I'm alone?

As I kept looking around, I hear the bushes and leaves on top of the trees rustle. I don't know if that's just the wind or that's something else. I can't see clearly, the fog is too thick.

I saw a flashlight lying on the ground so I picked it up and starting shining in the direction of the trees. I keep turning around as I keep feeling that someone's walking towards me. Wait a minute, I just realized something.

Didn't Ms. Val say that characters in a book won't notice the proofreader and the Mistake? Why am I scared of something that doesn't see me? Psh, this isn't scary at all.

"Hi."

"Oh, hello." I answered as I heard someone say hi to me and I smiled as turned off the flashlight. Wait a minute. "Aaaaahhh!"

I fell to the ground as I screamed, I jumped because of the surprise I received making me lose my balance. I quickly grabbed the flashlight and turned it on. I started flashing the flashlight in front of me and I saw a kid standing still, looking at me.

Okay, I don't know about you, but that's just creepy. A kid just walks to you in the middle of the fog and does nothing but stares at you. That's just creepy man. Well, he did say hi to me so, he did something. He did something other than just stand still and look at me.

Wait, did this kid get transported with me inside the book? Was he inside the house while I entered the book? Oh, shoot! How did I not notice him!

"You gave me quite the scare there, kid." I said as I stood up, dusting off my pants. "So, why were you inside our house? You shouldn't be entering other people's houses without their permission, or else you'll get yourself into lots of trouble."

The kid didn't answer and he just looked at me. He didn't move, he just stared at me. He's honestly starting to creep me out. Correction, he's already creeping me out.

"Hey? Are you okay kid?"

"I don't know what you're talking about. This is my home."

"Say what now?"

The kid's face suddenly started glowing with excitement as he started jumping up and down. "Are you one of my guests? Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! This'll be so much fun!" The kid then suddenly grabbed my hand and started running towards the forest. The more we run the further we go into the forest.

"Hey, where are we going!?" I yelled as I was getting dragged along as he kept running.

"Where else, to the party of course!"

"Party?"

"Yes! Party! My birthday party!"

Ohh, this must be the child that the story was talking about. Like the title implies, Child's Birthday. Wait, if this kid is just a character in the story I'm proofreading, how can he see me? Because as far as I know, I remember Ms. Val saying that the characters of the story can't see the proofreader. Could this have something to do with the proofreading book glowing earlier? Gaah! Lots of unanswered questions floating around my brain! Whatever reason it is that this kid can see me, it'll have to wait. I have to finish proofreading this story so I can get back home and tell Ms. Val

Minutes of running passed by and we finally reached the party area the kid was talking about. It was a table surrounding by towering trees, it looks like we are at the center of the forest. The trees are cut off as they surround the table, letting the moonlight shine on the space where the table was.

"Sit here." The kid said as he pulled my hand, making me stop in front of an empty chair.

"Thank you." I said as I sat down on the chair. The kid sat on an empty chair in front of me.

"Eat up!" The kid said and a cake suddenly appeared in mid-air. "After eating, we'll start playing games! We'll have lots of fun!"

"Aren't we going to wait for the other guests?" I asked as I grabbed the plate in front of me. I know, I know. I should leave and look for the Mistake so I can return home and tell Ms. Val about this. But come on, he's a kid whose friends didn't come to his birthday party, how can I leave? It makes me sad thinking about it. He's celebrating his birthday alone, no kid wants to be celebrating their birthday alone, that's just sad.

"Well, I've been waiting for them to come, but they're not showing up. I invited my friends, family, and even the forest animals to come to my birthday. But none of them came. Maybe they just lost their invitations and they don't know where the party is. But that's okay, I can wait for them a little bit more. Besides, you're here so that helps waiting easier. I have someone to wait with."

"Are you okay?" I asked as I looked at the kid. Hearing his story, I can sense that there's denial in his heart. He's denying the fact that people are not coming to his party, he's lying to himself.

"Hm? Oh yeah, I'm okay. Why did you ask?"

"Well, I felt like you have some problem or something. I can listen if you want to."

"It's okay, I can handle these, they're nothing, I'm a strong boy. I don't want anyone to be overthinking about me. Plus, everyone has problems, everyone's facing problems of their own, so I shouldn't give my problems to other people, I should fight them on my own. Anyway, you should eat up! We don't want the cake to go soggy or anything."

As the kid finished talking, cake suddenly appeared in front of me on top of a plate. I don't want to be rude or anything by not accepting the cake he gave me, so I started eating it. At first, I was afraid that it would taste weird and funny, but as soon as I started eating it, it tastes just like a normal cake. "It's delicious!" I said as I kept eating the cake on my plate.

"I'm glad you like it. There's more where that came from. Oh, I can't believe that someone came to my party! Now I have someone who'll be my friend forever! I'll never let her go!"

I immediately spit out the cake I was eating as I heard him say that he won't let me go.

"Excuse me, what!?"
