Laughing Lady

This incident is the reaon why, until now, I put a pillow over my head whenever I go to sleep…

This happened back in our old house. It was a large house that was divided into two, since another family was in the other half, but we only had one gate. The house was pretty old, I mean, really old and that's why we had many unusual experiences there, especially to my older sister.

There were two rooms in our unit, one downstairs which was our Mama and Papa's room, and another upstairs which is my room which I shared with my older brother and sister. To explain how the layout of the house was, as soon as you go upstairs, you would reach the room at once.

Like, you go up the stairs, and when you reach the top, you just look to the left and that's where you'll see us sleeping. When you go downstairs, you would have to pass by the living room and the kitchen before getting to Mama and Papa's room. Sorry, I felt I needed to describe all that so you could visualize it too.

I was nine years old when it happened.

That night, I was the only one sleeping in our room since my older sister stayed overnight at her classmate's house, and my older brother had to go somewhere. I was scared then, since my older sister had been telling us about unusual things that were happening to her. And since I was alone upstairs and Mama and Papa were a bit far, and they wouldn't be able to hear me at once if I started screaming out of fear.

I was deathly afraid, but I needed to get through that night.

I have already laid down on the bed, and I knew that I'd been sleeping for a while when suddenly…

BLAG!

It was like there was a large person being slammed onto the wall. It sounded like what the police do when they're raiding a drug lord's hideout and they find a suspect. Somehow it felt that it was coming from downstairs…

But I could still feel and hear everything.

At first, I was scared because I thought it might be a burglar! I kept quiet and tried to feel where the person was moving. After a few more slams on the wall, it became quiet…

By the way, my usual position whenever I slept or lay down on the bed was on my side, so one of my ears could hear pretty much everything around me. My back faced the stairs and my feet were also near it.

A while later, I heard footsteps coming up our stairs. They were really heavy!

I could tell because I could feel how the steps shook as well as the impact that their feet had on the steps. It sounded as if it was the footsteps of a very large guy.

I was now completely and utterly scared but I was still thinking that it was a burglar or some other person up to no good. I felt dread because this experience was very much like what my older sister told me about.

I could hear that their footsteps were on their way up. So I quickly grabbed the blanket and covered myself with it, facing away from the stairs. I shut my eyes as tightly as I could, but I couldn't understand why I could still see a shadow coming up the stairs. I wanted to run away so badly…

To my horror, I realized that I couldn't move anymore!

I couldn't even get my feet to move since it was near the stairs. I knew that thing was near, and I could see them even though my eyes were closed.

But I couldn't move…

I wanted to scream, but nothing came out. Even my voice was gone and I couldn't make a sound. I was sweating buckets then. At that moment I knew that this thing was already on the second floor. It walked over to the side of my bed where my head was…

Then they stopped and stopped right in front of me!

By this time, I knew that this thing was female, I couldn't figure out their exact appearance, but of course, I didn't want to see her so I kept my eyes shut.

She was still in front of me when I went into panic mode due to the excessive stress and fear that I was feeling. I thought of praying the Hail Mary or the Apostle's Creed… I forgot which one!

The bottom line was that I knew it wasn't something from my heart. I just recited a memorized prayer in my head due to extreme fright.

While I was praying, she lowered her head to mine. And you know what she did?

She laughed! Loudly too!

You know that kind of laugh a female villain had, that shrill one?! That tone that sounded like it was just mocking you for the senseless prayer that you're uttering?!

She laughed for quite a while and I could feel the cold air brushing past my ears and along the side of my face even though I had a blanket over my head. It felt like she was touching me…

I said to myself, that's it!

I stood up with my eyes closed and ran down the stairs, almost falling at some point. Then I ran past the living room and kitchen towards Papa and Mama's room still with my eyes closed but screaming my heart out!

I was bawling my eyes out by the time they had opened the door for me. Thankfully, they invited me to go sleep in their room after seeing me in hysterics.

Eventually, I also told the story to my older sister, but that kind of thing wasn't new to her, apparently. She said that what she had experienced before was worse than that.

Still, ever since that happened to me, I always made sure to have my head sandwiched between pillows. And now, my ears are a little more sensitive to those kinds of events than my eyes are.
