I Should Have Been There

Warning: This chapter is truly dreadful. Everything happy will come to an end. So, if you don't wish to see a dreadful ending, look away.

Still here? Then I guess you're looking for something dreadful.

"Wally? May I have a word with you for a second?" Anna asked.

"Uhm, sure. Do you mind, Dessie?" I told Destiny.

"Alright." Destiny said.

I was puzzled on why Anna asked to have a word with me. It turns out that she just wished to catch-up with me.

"So, a girlfriend?" she began.

"Yeah. I'm very happy with her" I replied.

"You're a grown man now, Wally" she teased.

"Thanks. Well, how about you? Any special one yet?" I asked.

"No, not really. I'm focusing on my studies" she replied.

"That's very good" I replied.

"Wally, I'm sorry but, I need to go home now." Destiny suddenly said coming to me.

"Oh, alright. Do you want me to drive you home?" I offered.

"No, I'm fine. You go have fun." Destiny replied.

And there was the sentence that I wish I knew what it meant. I did what she said. She walked away and called an uber.

"Is something wrong with her?" Anna asked.

"I don't know" I replied.

When I said, "I don't know", I really didn't know if something was wrong with her. All I know is that we were having a minute ago, then she ran towards me like it was an emergency. And when she said "No, I'm fine. You go have fun.", it really meant that I was supposed to follow her. But then, I didn't…

Destiny rode an uber back to her house. She came back there with her father drunk and angry at her. He yelled at her for a lot of minutes, until Destiny couldn't take it anymore. She took the keys and drove away. She didn't know that much about driving, but she drove away anyway.

The reason why I said "there was the sentence that I wish I knew what it meant" is that… I regretted that I didn't follow her because that's what it meant. I should've followed her. I should've been there. She didn't need to run away from home.

Bang. Car crash. Accident. She didn't die, but she was in a state of comatose. The doctors said that the accident heavily impacted her brain, there was a huge chance she won't remember anything when she wakes up. I felt every guilt that I could feel in my bones. I was too naïve.
