Chapter 35: Stop her

Less than five minutes after ending the call to my father I saw him exiting the escalator, there was concern written all over his face, he didn’t totally believe when I told him I was alright. It was always the same since mom died and with last week event he was overdoing it.

When he reached us the first thing he did was to look at me all around to make sure I had nothing then asked what was happening.

“It’s because of her mother, she is sick.” I said signaling at Niki who stay there, a silent witness of the exchange between me and my father.

“What happened to her ?” He asked me I didn’t knew the details so I asked Niki to explain what had happened to her.

“She was just fine last Wednesday and at night she went on for her daily jogging as usual but till midnight she didn’t came back or called either and Sam went out to look for her. When Sam came back he said he had found her passed out on the asphalt but she didn’t show any signs of being attacked by someone or something, the doctor who treat her that night said that she had plunged into coma but he was unable to find was caused it. She was perfectly healthy but now she getting worse at each second and her stated hadn’t improve since she was admitted here.” At that point Niki was crying so much that she couldn’t stay upright by herself that I had to hold her so she wouldn’t fall to the ground.

“And ...and yesterday the doctor said that if she continue that way she will be soon dead, but that can’t be she is my mom.” She said that an caught my father hand and looked pleadingly at him. “You can save her right?” She asked but dad didn’t said anything to her. “Please do something, you have to help her...all the other doctor will just stay there and wait until she died but I can’t accept it....please help her.” She pleaded.

“I will see what I can do.” He said but by the tone of his voice I could see that there weren’t much he could do in this case.

“Niki can you take a seat please I have to talk to Daisy for a moment.” Dad ask her reassuringly, she nodded and took a seat and dad lead toward the escalator he exited just moments before. When the door closed we were the only one inside.

“You shouldn't have taken her here.” Was the first thing he said.

“Why?” I wanted to know.

“Her mother is dying, I can’t help that.” He responded in a neutral tone.

“But you’re a doctor and the hospital is full of doctors, how aren’t you able to cure her?” I asked, I was then the one who was about to cry.

“Daisy, you have to understand that doctor don’t do miracles we can help people to heal but if only we can find the cause of their illness. But in this case nobody knows what happened to that lady and she hasn’t responded to all the treatment the had used upon her but her stated only got severer since she was admitted.” He said as he put a hand on my shoulder and trying to comfort me.

I wasn’t the one who needed comforting the most in those moments, Niki was, her mother was dying right in front of her and she couldn’t do anything to help her.

“Please dad.” I said as I felt warm tears on my cheeks. He hugged me hard.

“I’m sorry honey, I didn’t know what to do.” He said defeated. “You have to go back and stay with her it’s the only thing you can do for her now.” He added.

“But...but...” I tried o insist but he stopped me.

“I’m sorry honey if there was anyway to save her we would have done it. The doctors at the ICU had already use all the means and the treatments known to treat cases like this but her body is not responding and there is nothing they can do.” He said as he patted my back. “You have to go back with her and don’t let her alone I will ask they give a call to her family members if someone can come and stay with her.” He finished.

The escalator door opened and he lead me to the nurse station, he asked me to wait for him and he went to talk about something with a nurse seated behind the counter. He said something and she handed him a file, dad read it for a while and wrote something on one page before closing it and handing it back to her.

He came back to where I was standing and we redid the way back the Niki’s mom room. Into the escalator this time it’s wasn’t only both of us but also other people. One of them another doctor call the attention of my father and they started about what I supposed was an operation they had done together but I couldn’t understand what it was all about because of the words the use, a lot of medical terminology.

The other doctor exited the escalator on the stage right below the ICU and the rest of the persons too except for one, it was Agnes. This time she wasn’t looking at me like in the bus but seemed lost in her thoughts. Her face was expressionless and her eyes were two bottomless pits of obscurity.

“Oh no!” I was startled after seeing them.

“What happened?” Dad ask.

“No...nothing!” I quickly exclaimed and tried hard to calm myself it’s wasn’t the first time for me to see such a thing and I feared it wouldn’t be the last either.

The escalator door opened and we exited it and started walking toward Niki’s mom room but where stopped but a nurse who came running toward my father with a file into her hands.

“We are losing her, her constant are dropping again.” She said quickly.

Niki was on her feet at the door as it was wide open and her face was flushed because of all the crying she had done early, even if she wasn’t sobbing like at school or when she was talking to my father there were silent tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Call Dr. Pierce!” Dad said quickly and run toward the room.

“We already did he is coming.” The nurse answered.

I was walking me too toward the room when I felt a hand that had caught my arm, it’s was Agnes.

“Wh...wha...wh...” I stuttered.

I could heard voice taking from inside her but she wasn’t moving her mouth or looking at me and one of them said clearly. “You have to stop her...help me!”
