Darren remained beside Derek. There was no sound other than the sound of their chewing and the occasional slurping from the soda cup. Darren finished his first chicken sandwich before he asked. "So, you gonna tell me what happened to your face?"

"I don't really feel like it," Derek replied dismissively.

"Why?" Darren asked.

Derek turned to face him, scanning Darren again. "You're a white guy and you're bigger and taller than the average dude. There ain't nobody who'd wanna pick a fight with you."

"I wasn't born tall and big. Most of my life, I was small. My best friend, who is a girl, was a foot taller than me." He did wake up with muscles a month ago, but he left that part out.
