Cakes and onions?

I sat holding Sunny tight in my embrace as the lake was still and quiet. She nestled her head into my chest and closed her eyes, breathing delicately as a mouse. I rested my chin on her head and looked around the lake we were further out then I intended and I had to get us back to the dock, if I was to keep this date on plan. I smiled gleefully to myself thinking that, this date is already more then I could have hoped for. I rubbed Sunny's back gently and her eyes darted up to mine with a warm soothing expression.

"I'm going to row us back to the dock now, you must be getting hungry", I spoke in a hushed tone to not disturb the consuming moment. I slid my hands from her to take hold of the oars as she lifted herself from me and braced herself to stand. I wrapped my arms back around her before she could move. "Where do you think you're going?", I held her to my chest as she squealed and giggled.

"I was trying to move so you could row!", she said still giggling pretending to try to break away from my hug. "I guess I can stay here then only if I'm not in the way", she huffed resting her head on my shoulder looking up at me with a cheeky grin. Without thinking I gave her a peck on the forehead. I took my arms from her slowly incase she darted up and I took hold of the oars once again.

"In the way! never, with you so close I can row like 10 men", I raised my eyebrows triumphantly as she laughed loudly before nestling herself back into my chest. As we reached the dock I secured the rope so we wouldn't drift back out on the lake. I wrapped my arms around her once again and breathed her in, a little air of disappointment filled my chest. "If I didn't have another surprise for you I'd never want to let go", I sighed in defeat as I dropped my arms from around her. She stood up and turned to face me, I got to my feet carefully to not rock the boat. I hopped up out of the boat easily, I had plenty of practice from my fishing trips with Al.

"Sweet! Please Can you help me climb out!", she called to me looking positively frazzled. I started to feel panic that I didn't ask her if she's been on the water before. I leaned over the edge of the dock and held out both hands to her. She grabbed hold of my hands following my instructions she put one foot on the dock. As she rested her foot on the dock the boat shifted and losing her balance she grabbed hold of my arms tightly. I reacted and grabbed hold of her waist to steady her, she then lifter her back foot and I guided her completely onto dry land. "Thank you sweet, I haven't been on a boat since I was 6 and my dad would always pretend to drop me when helping me out after a trip", she said out of breath, "and one time he actually did drop me".

"Ah, I'm so sorry, I should have asked before taking you onto the lake", I said with a flurry of guilt and regret washing over me. "So I guess this is a worst date for you so far", I held her hands in mine avoiding her gaze.

"Worst not even close, so far I'd say you're in the running for the best date I've ever had", she said delicately rubbing her nose to mine. "But maybe lose the shirt, I can tell you're not comfortable", she tugged on my grey shirt collar which I'd only worn to look 'date ready'. She could see right through me that it wasn't me, so I took off the shirt and threw it in the lake. "Hold on I didn't say throw it in the lake now you'll never get it back!", she pointed at the lake as I tussled my hair embarrassed. I wasn't thinking and now my only nice dress shirt was gone. I burst out laughing at what I'd done and she started to laugh just as hard.

"Okay now to get rid of my shirt", I said lifting my T-shirt as she stopped laughing immediately and blushed looking at my exposed stomach. She scrambled and grabbed my hand holding my shirt to stop me from throwing it in the lake. "Woah I though you said to lose the shirt, I'm just doing as I'm told", I winked at her with a mischievous smirk. She pulled my shirt down and flushed red, but still stealing glances at me. "Sunny I'm just kidding… that is unless you want me to take my shirt off", I grinned again slowly attempting to lift my shirt again. Her eyes met mine and a devilish smile crept across her face. She let go of my hand turned away from me, holding her arms defiantly.

"If you insist on taking your shirt off I won't stop you but by the looks of this weather you'll get a mighty bad sun burn", she looked over her shoulder at me triumphantly as if to say beat that. She had me beat this time so I relented and let go of my shirt. I put my arm over her shoulder and kissed her cheek, showing her she had been victorious. We started walking to the next location as an urge to win crept up.

"Just remember sunny next time you tell me to take my shirt off I will", I whispered as I felt her stiffen under my arm, looking up at me her cheeks a beautiful rose pink when she was embarrassed. I winked at her as she stuck out her tongue to me in response.

"Yeah well maybe when you ask me to so will I", she replied brazenly continuing to walk unaffected by her words whilst I became stuck in place. My mouth was hanging open and a look of shock was carved into my face. She spun around walking slowly backwards, her winning smile had returned with a wink back at me. "Are you coming mr muscles?", she outstretched her arm for my hand and I shook my head catching up to her, I took her hand in mine and I tried to not think about what she had said. She wasn't afraid to match me at my levels of mischief and I liked that about her. Girls I knew before seemed so delicate and were never able to challenge me, but Sunny was different she was never satisfied with losing. Her attitude towards games was infectious and I've never had to try this hard before, I loved it.

"So Sunny, what is your favourite food?", I said changing the subject so my mind didn't wander.

"Cake of course", she beamed, "but if you mean savoury food, I guess it would have to be fried chicken". She seemed to be captivated by a dreamy expression perhaps imagining fried chicken. I chuckled at the cute look on her face as she snapped back to reality. "Well then what's yours?", she said quickly looking at me intensely.

"Cake of course!", I smiled gleefully at our shared love of cakes. "But I also love burgers with extra onions", just as the word onions left my mouth, Sunny's face twisted into a look of horror and disgust. "Ah I guess you don't like onions then?", I smirked as she looked at me confused because she hadn't said anything yet.

"How would you know I don't like them? I never actually said I didn't ", she huffed and folded her arms as she stopped walking, turning her head away in annoyance. I pushed down my desire to smile from how cute I thought she was. I stood in front of her and wrapped my arms around her, which almost made her faulter in her efforts to look annoyed.

"Didn't I tell you I can read minds?", her eyes rolled in response to my ridiculous question. "Sunny I lo.. like that when you think about things you hate your face gives you away", her eyes drifted to meet mine, "I like that you light up as bright as the sun when you see something you like and I like that when I look at you my brain gets all kinds of messed up and I say the complete wrong thing", my face dropped slightly as i started to feel like I was rambling and messing things up. She unfolded her arms and placed her hands on my cheeks so softly it felt like the brush of feathers. She popped up onto her tiptoes and rested her nose against mine.

"You say all the right things", she kissed me softly and tenderly as I tightened my arms around her. She pulled away from me sliding her hands to my chest, "but remember I won't want to kiss you if you eat too many onions", she giggled as I returned to holding her hand, we walked along dreamily continuing to talk about what we liked and hated.

Looking at my watch we were a little behind schedule but it should be okay I just needed to make sure we weren't late for the last part of the date and it will be a success.
