Why Me?

The group of three went to a park down the street. They sat down on a bench. The warm breeze felt nice, you could tell that summer was here. Green grass and the green trees brought life into this little town. People were walking in a distance and weren't paying attention to the trio. They were almost like shadows in the background.

"What do you need to know? It's been over 8 years since I've seen Martin. I doubt I would know anything of use by now." Anne said with a glossy look in her eyes. Just the mention of his name made her think of every little memory of the two of them. The happiness, the passion, the pain, the sorrow.

The older gentleman looked at Anne with a gentle smile. "First things first. My name is Agent Frank and my colleague here is Agent Bell. We're part of a private sector of the FBI. We've been following a series of disappearances down in Virginia. I can't give you all the details, but one of the men involved is Martin True. We believe he's the right hand man of the person who is in charge. Our problem is, we can't get close enough to any of them to find out what is going on. We've done some digging and have found that even though it has been over 8 years since you have last had contact with Martin, you're the only person leave that circle of people alive."

Anne sat there and took in all the information. She knew that Martin and his friends were dangerous. She left for the sake of her child. She was 8 months pregnant when she left. Barely 20 years old. The last thing she saw was peeking through a door that was cracked open with Martin and his friends laughing. Some poor soul was wrapped in a dark mist, slowly disappearing. Eventually the person was gone with nothing but a faint sigh. She knew she had to get her child to a safe place. These people were playing with something dark and it consumed their lives. She slipped away with nothing but the clothes on her back. The only comfort she had was she never gave anyone her real name. Not even Martin knew her real identity and she wanted to keep it that way.

About a week after she left she had tried to look him up. He had a new girl on his arm, and a happy smile. It hurt, but that was when she knew he didn't love her. What they had wasn't real love. She was a cute girl with fire in her heart that could melt the polar ice caps and he was a dark cold creature that wanted nothing but power. She didn't know her full potential until she had gotten mixed up in that group. The light that she was once able to control and bring warmth had flickered out when she left that world.

Anne looked up suddenly after being lost in thought. "How did you know it was me? I never told anyone my real name or identity. They should all know me as Carrie Marie."

The Agent Bell handed Anne a folder. She opened it up and she looked at the paper written on it. Not much was there. A few old security shots from when she was dating Martin, some before and some after she was pregnant. Her fake social media account with her fake name. She raised an eye brow as she turned the papers over. There was a picture of the man who disappeared the night she left Martin. Beside the picture was the name of a restaurant and a snapshot of her and Martin eating and one of Martins' friends grabbing the poor man. There was a finger print on a glass. It clicked. Anne had gotten her finger prints taken at Alexander's school and she agreed to have her and Alexander's finger prints in a data base for the public. She thought no one would find her. She thought she was safe.

Anne sighed and looked at the agents. "What do you want? I was dating him, but I didn't know his business. I didn't know anything that was going on there."

Agent Bell smiled, "Open the envelope that is in the folder. This is why we need you."

Anne looked through the folder and found an envelope tucked away. Inside was a picture of her, but she was glowing white and there was a flame around her hands. On the back of the picture was a note.

Sam, we need to find this woman and get rid of her. She knows too much. Find her and take the child and bring him back to me. -Martin

Anne suddenly felt nauseous. The only time she used her powers was when she was with them in the cave. She had no idea anyone took a picture of her.

"How did you get this picture and who is Sam? Do they know who I am?"

"No, at least not to our knowledge. We obtained this picture about 6 years ago from a messenger that we managed to capture. We don't know how but the messenger disappeared in a black mist about 10 minutes later. The only thing we managed to get was that envelope. We could not tell you who Sam is. This is the only time we've seen that name." Agent Frank answered. He pulled out a note pad and began writing things down. Anne looked at him carefully, she had no clue what to think anymore. All that she knew about was she had to keep her son safe.

Agent Bell looked at Anne, "Anne, can you tell us what you know? For the past 9 years people have been disappearing without a trace. The only thing we know for sure is Martin and his friends are there every time."

Anne smiled faintly at them, she felt a little flicker of light inside of her heart. Almost as if someone was trying to light a lighter. "I'll tell you everything, but I need 2 things in return. Number 1, keep my family safe. That is the top priority." The two agents nodded in agreement, "and the second thing is I want to help bring them down. A sort of revenge for my life turning out this way."

The agents smiled, Agent Frank held out his hand for a hand shake, "Welcome to the team."
