Anne warmly took Agent Franks hand. She knew it wasn't going to be easy, and could put her life in danger, but most of her knew that if the FBI had found her, it was only a matter of time before Martin and his friends knew where she was. The other part of her was excited for the thrill. It had been forever since she had that feeling and she wasn't about to let it go.
Anne looked at her phone and saw that it was 2:30 already. "First thing first, I'm not bringing my family with me. We need to go and have a talk and tell them what's going on."
Agent Bell looked at her. "What do you mean, we can't tell them what you're doing. It's all confidential."
"We don't have to tell them everything. We'll just tell them that I need to help you guys to destroy that son of a gun who left me to be a single mother. It's summer vacation. Alexander is with my parents for the next few hours, Joseph will be home soon, and Miles is at work. Let me call Miles and find out where he is today. Then we'll go over there and talk to him first."
Agent Frank had stared at Anne. "What do you mean by we?"
"You both are coming with me. How the hell am I supposed to explain to them, by myself, what's going on? They're going to think I'm nuts. That and we have to explain to them that the government is going to pay my rent and tell my work I'm needed for national security."
They both raised their eyebrows, "what do you mean national security?"
"We'll get to that when I tell you what I know. Just do as I say or I won't help you with anything."
Agent Frank started to open his mouth but then he shut it. He could tell that she wasn't playing around. If there was something more serious than what they originally thought going on, they'll need her help.
Anne called Miles and they drove to the house he's working at. When they pulled up he came out with a confused look. Anne told him to get into the car and they had to go for a little drive. She explained how she had to leave and her reasoning why.
"No, you're not going. It's too dangerous, I can't lose you." He looked at his girlfriend with those sad blue eyes. He truly loved her.
"I won't be gone long, it will be 2 months tops, I would never leave you forever. I love you and our family. I just have to do this."
"Then I'm going with you. I'm not letting you do this alone." He looked at her with the stubborn eyes. Just with that look she knew he had made up his mind and there was no point fighting.
Agent Bell looked at Miles. "We can't have anyone come with us. It's confidential and it's for everyone's safety."
Anne sighed. "He's coming with us. I know him better than anyone. We aren't going to change his mind. Miles, call Joseph and tell him to pick. He can stay with his mom until we get back. Now we only have to talk to my parents about them watching Alexander."
"Listen you two, why are both of you bossing us around. We're the agents, what we say is what is going to happen. Miles cannot come with us."
"Listen Bell, it's either Miles comes with us or no one goes. Besides, what is going to happen? He can hang out on the side lines and play cheerleader."
Miles started laughing. He's used to her little sarcastic remarks. Agent Frank even had to chuckle. He knew he wasn't going to change anyone's minds. He had been on this case a few years longer than Agent Bell. He was just happy to have a breakthrough.
Agent Bell went silent and started to sulk. Anne was driving a long and they pulled up to her parents house. It was small, big enough for the two of them but they didn't need much space. They were done raising kids and enjoyed spending time with their grandkids.
"Mom, Dad, this is Agent Frank and Agent Bell. Agents, these are my parents Larry and Leah. We need to sit down and talk. Where's Alexander?"
Larry looked at his daughter, "he's playing on his swing set with the dog. What is going on?"
Leah brought out a pitcher of lemonade and sat down on the porch. Everyone sat down. Anne explained the situation.
"Okay, if it is what you need to do Alexander can stay here," Larry said. He knew better than to argue with Anne. When she had her mind set on something, nothing was going to change it. He worried for her safety but he was in the military and he had an idea of the importance of the situation. When the government calls, you need to help, especially if it brings his daughters peace of mind back.
"How long will this be? What are we going to tell Alexander?" Leah was a little more cautious. She wanted Alexander to be safe.
"Don't worry mom, I can handle that." Anne look towards the swing set. "Alexander come here!" Agent Bell jumped, he was not expecting Anne to tell.
Alexander ran up to his mom and gave her a hug. "Hi mama what's up doc?" He smiled his jack-o-lantern smile.
"Dad and I have to go be super secret spies and save the world, you need to stay with Gram and Gramp until we get back. Is that okay with you?"
Alexander thought for a minute. You could almost see him think. He held his nerf gun, and stood a salute. Someone had been watching military show with his Gramps lately. "Yes ma'am!" He gave his parents a hug and a kiss on the cheek and ran off playing. The agents looked confused as to what happened.
"He wants to be in the military, sometimes it's just best to do the commander voice and tell him the truth."
Anne and Miles gave them all hugs and left. Sometimes a quick goodbye is better than a drown out one. Now to go see Joseph.
When they got to the apartment Joseph was just hanging out in his room.
"Joseph, Anne and I are going with these agents to help to some top secret things. We talked with your mom and she's waiting for you, we'll drop you off for the summer."
"What?! I don't want to go. I want to stay here. I have plans with my friends!"
Anne sighed, Miles never really had the best way of breaking news to that kid. "What your father means is you need to stay with your mom. You have your license, and your mom has a friend who wants you to work for the summer. If you can borrow a car you can come back here once a week and check on the house, but other than that it's safer if you stay with your mom."
Joseph sulked onto his bed. "I guess I don't have a choice. When are we leaving?" Everyone looked at the agents.
Agent Frank looked at his watch, "Thirty minutes. The quicker we leave the quicker we can start the real work."
Everyone packed and left. They dropped off Joseph and drove down the road. They had a long drive ahead of them.
Anne looked at Miles, "Miles, you're going to learn a lot of things about me that I never told anyone."
He looked confused. He thought he knew everything about her.
Agent Bell cleared his throat, "should we use this opportunity to have you tell us what you know Anne?"
She sighed. Might as well get this over with.
