At sunrise, a janitor yawned tiredly walking down the corridor until he reached the storage room with cleaning supplies. He was surprised to see a small boy lying on the ground unconscious, the whole room full of the stench of urine his face scrunching in displeasure.
He quickly picked the boy and ran to meet a nurse on duty. After answering some questions and other formalities he went back to his duties.
When Liu Zhiqiang was informed about the latest incident, he rushed to the hospital facing the doctor with an expression full of despair. The doctor who saw the distressed father in front of him couldn't help but ask something that had been bothering him since they brought the poor boy to him. "Do you know how he got locked up in the storage room? Last time we saw him he was with you and your wife, right?"
Liu Zhiqiang paused before he replied casually. "I think one of his friends whom we brought along must have played a prank on him. Thank you for taking care of him."
The doctor shook his head, not saying anything. He had already seen the handprint on the boy's face and the incompatible statement from the man's wife already confirmed his doubts. But he was helpless too, being a mere employee of the man himself. "If that is the case, I will take my leave. Please excuse me."
Wang Yong remained in the hospital for two weeks, receiving no visitors from that day. But he never felt alone, often talking and playing with Mingli and Mao Zhi. Sometimes he noticed that the doctor and nurses treated him kindly, their eyes full of sympathetic gazes.
When it was time for him to be discharged, he waited for his parents for a long time but they didn't come. The nurse that had come to check his vital signs for the last door said. "It seems like your parents won't be able to pick you up. Do you know anyone else we can call instead?"
Seeing the small boy shake his head dejectedly, her heart twisted in pain. She smiled softly. "My shift is ending soon, I can drop you off if you want, is that okay?"
"There is no need to do that, I will send him back myself!" An old woman stood at the door wearing a hat and holding on one hand some luggage. She smiled at the little boy, her eyes creasing in delight. "Yong'er!"
"Grandma Fan!" He ran to hug her, barely reaching up to her waist. He closed his eyes and inhaled her flowery scent.
When they separated, she took his little backpack and carried him home. Fan Qiuyue was shocked to see her mother with her forgotten son in her house when she and her husband arrived late in the night so she smiling nervously. "Mother, what are you doing here? I wasn't exp-"
Her words were cut off because her face was whipped to the side, her mother's fingerprints imprinted on her face. Liu Zhiqiang rushed to support his wife as he turned to his mother-in-law. "Mother, why did you slap her?"
Grandma Fan said. "Stay out of this! As a father, it can be expected that you forgot to pick up your son from the hospital but her.... A mother forgetting her own son, isn't that abominable? What kind of person are you?
Fan Qiuyue glared at her mother, her teary eyes full of hatred as she held her cheek. "I thought you were here to comfort me over the death of my unborn baby but here you are, slapping me because this little murderer!"
Grandma Fan raised her hand again to hit her but suddenly dropped her hand sighing wearily. "I have only come here to tell you that I am planning to take Wang Yong back with me to raise when I am going back. This cannot continue anymore, Yue'er."
Liu Zhiqiang immediately refused her request. "No, Mother! Wang Yong is not going anywhere!"
Fan Qiuyue happily agreed. "If you want, you can take that unwanted thing out of my house! I don't want to see him!" When she saw her husband glare at her, she recoiled with fear in her eyes and whispered hurriedly. "Husband, we cannot keep him here anymore. He is just a liability to us and you know it! I am sure that if we try harder again, we would have a stronger baby in the future....Don't tell me you want him to be your heir in the future? Imagine what people will say about us!"
His eyes which were wavering turned resolute when he faced his mother-in-law. He looked at the oblivious little boy who smiled happily at him and felt disgust instead. So what if he was adorable and cute? He was like a fool, always sluggish and annoying unlike what he had imagined for his firstborn.
"You can take him away. Make sure he never comes back again. We don't want him here." He left the room, leaving Fan Qiuyue alone with her mother, her lips curved in satisfaction.
Grandma Fan looked at her grandson sadly, her heart aching with every smile he gave his eyes full of radiance. She stared at her daughter who had an ugly heart underneath her beautiful skin. "You, Fan Qiuyue are also not allowed to ever come back to my house! I don't no longer have a daughter like you!"
"Good! The doors of this house are not opened to strangers! Guards! Guards! Come and take this old hag away! Sweep the floors when they are gone." She left them in anger, refusing to spare them another glance.
Grandma Fan was thinking about how to explain to the little child when the he turned to face her, his smiling face hiding an unknown sadness in his eyes. "Grandma Fan, Mummy and Daddy don't want me anymore?"
"That's not true. They do but-"
He grabbed the edge of her skirt, his big blue eyes full of unshed tears. "Then will you love me instead? I am not smart at all and I am very clumsy but will you accept me, never leaving me alone in the dark again? I promise I will try to be good!"
Grandma Fan hugged him tightly, her heart clenching and unclenching with every breath she took into her body. She had come here to ask her daughter for some money since the company went bankrupt a few months ago. It seemed like that was not longer possible. "Its enough if you have the will to live. I will always support and defend you!"
