The next morning was a gloomy morning for the Liu family as everyone present on the breakfast table was quiet. Bohai turned to his mother who wore a green long sleeve dress and a pair of sunshades covering her eyes. "Mum, are you okay?"
"Not really, dear. Yesterday night was like a nightmare for me. My head is aching when light enters my eyes." Fan Qiuyue smiled at her son, avoiding eye contact with her husband.
"Oh." He thanked the maid who passed him a plate of pancakes before he continued. "I think we should just forget about this matter."
"Why?" Liu Zhiqiang asked in a gruff manager, ignoring his wife who unconsciously jerked at the sound of his voice.
"We cannot let our reputation get stained just because Brother decided he wanted money. Grandma is very sick. Maybe he was in dire need in of it that's why he did this." The old maid who stood at the side shook her head in dissatisfaction when she heard his words. The Second Young Master was a reasonable and well behaved person. How come today his words were all sprouted to condemn his senior brother of a crime that he wasn't even sure he committed?
"No way. If he really considered us as his parents, then he wouldn't have committed such an abominable crime! Even if his grandmother was sick, he should have told us instead of stealing from us. I won't let him get away with this!" Liu Zhiqiang slammed the table in anger.
Bohai was about to reply when he felt his mother's hand cover his own silently. Fan Qiuyue finally faced her husband in righteous indignation. "Husband, you are correct! If he needed the money that badly, he should have just told us. As his mother, its also my fault. I will personally investigate this matter for you."
"Eh." Liu Zhiqiang wiped his lips and stood up, looking at his son. "Hai'er, are you not going to school? Let me drop you off."
Bohai smiled obediently and said. "Okay, Father."
When his father successfully dropped him in front of the school, he stood in front of the building instead of going inside. He called a cab and told the driver to take him somewhere else. He arrived in front of Wang Yong's school. When he entered the school hall, he noticed that some students were whispering furiously among each other. He greeted them with a polite smile. "Good morning, please can you help me find a student called Wang Yong?"
The students stopped talking and looked at him with suspicion and alarm. "Who are you to look for him?"
"I am his brother." He watched their expressions change to disbelief, curiosity and even sympathy. "What is wrong?"
"Don't you know?" One of them finally decided to reply to him. "He didn't come to school today. Don't ask me why, I don't know either." The student who had answered him was clearly reluctant to say anything else.
"Can you direct me to his class, please?" When one of the students who was a girl saw him make direct eye contact with her, she blushed and mumbled. " Follow me."
He reached the class and thanked the student, exchanging his phone number with her in order to keep an eye over his older brother. He saw a pretty middle aged woman standing in front of the class. "Good morning, Mrs. Are you the class teacher of this class?"
"Yes, how can I help you?" Mrs Luo looked at the bright handsome boy and close her book at which she had been pondering over.
"I am looking for my elder brother. I was told that he didn't come to school today, you know what happened to him?"
Mrs Luo gazed at the boy who clearly didn't have a good relationship with his brother. It is true that that naughty boy, Wang Yong was a little bit harsh and unkind towards people but she had observed that he was very good to his grandmother. So why was there bad blood between them? "His friend called me today to tell me that he won't be able to come to school because his grandmother passed away last night."
"What?!" Bohai was stunned into silence, his hand loosening over his bag that he wore. He looked at the teacher's eyes to confirm that she was not lying and asked her in desperation. "Do you know where he lives? Can you give me his address, please?"
Mrs Luo was pleased that he seemed very concerned about his brother so she wrote down his address. "Please pass on my condolences when you see him."
He collected the paper calmly but sprinted out of the school in a haste, making phone calls to his parents but none of them connected. He quickly got a cab and pushed the paper into the driver's hands, asking him to drive fast. When he got down, he saw a small group of people standing near the apartment acting as bystanders watching a scene unfold.
As he moved forward, he realized that it was the sight of the police and the loud noise of a woman shouting that had attracted them here. He was shocked to see it was his mother who stood in front of his brother pointing a finger at him.
"You are not a son of the Liu family! You have now become a street rat who steals things that do not belong to him! Where is your grandmother, where is she? Call her out here so she can take a good look at the son she raised so preciously!" Fan Qiuyue had just given Wang Yong two successive slaps, venting her anger at beaten like ant throughout the night. This morning, she realized that the sudden change in her husband's behavior probably had something to do with the thief that visited them last night.
"Mum...." Bohai rushed into the room, trying to restrain his mother and curb the situation. He realized that his brother was alone.
Fan Qiuyue pushed him aside. "Stop trying to plead for him. Kind Sirs, please arrest this thief right away. He came to our house yesterday with a weapon to coerce us into giving him money. He is a thief!"
Wang Yong who had kept quiet all this while suddenly said. "Where is the proof and who is the witness that says I did all things?
"Bohai saw your tattoo yesterday when you were about to leave. Wang Yong, I can't believe that you still have the galls to deny what you did. Don't think I don't know the reason you stole is because of your sick grandmother. Return the money and I will consider letting you go off with a light beating!" Fan Qiuyue raged, moving forward to grab his shirt aggressively.
Suddenly, an old woman moved forward from the crowd and hit her with the wooden cane she used to walk. "You wicked woman! Leave him alone, can't you not see that the poor boy is grieving?!"
"Ouch!" Fan Qiuyue yelped as the policemen struggled to restrain the old woman. "You evil hag, why are you interfering in a matter that does not concern you? I am his biological mother and I have the right to discipline him as I see fit!"
Wang Yong smiled cunningly when he heard her but still kept his head lowered as the old woman spoke. "You are not worthy of being anyone's mother! He has never given us, his neighbours any problem so how come he has turned into a thief overnight? Why can't you leave the boy alone? The only person who loved him and protected him, his grandmother is now gone!"
"What do you mean gone? To where?" Fan Qiuyue straightened her hair and her clothes in an attempt to intimidate the old woman.
"She died last night!"
