"Judging by its weight its… 1000. Oh fuck"

Gold was found as a raw material abundant in hell due to the treasure chests at the trial sites. But Gold itself wasn't the raw material, rather it was the gold coins.

And all gold coins no matter collected from which trial had a uniform weight and shape. It was as if someone had 3D printed them and were trying to scam them.

Of course, it wasn't true gold either. 100% pure gold would have been too soft to be molded into coins. But the composition of the gold alloy itself had always been found fixed no matter the source of the coin.

Thus, some people like Klautz who had lived decades in hell working with coins could count the number of coins just by judging it from the external weight.

One must note that Klautz hadn't even opened the pouch to dictate its contents. Just the sound of chunking coins and their weight was enough.

But Colt wasn't aware of that.
