"What?" That was the first thing she said when the commander gave her the order.
"Leading the volcano division." She writing his paperwork. "You might not know this, because you were a Private 6 months ago, but the Volcano division was designed as a special task force. I requested its creation 2 years ago but couldn't get the support, but with the number of recruits coming in, it has finally been approved." Zaya nodded wondering why she was leading this task force. "It's made out of our top recruits of earth and fire bender." Zaya about asks then he instantly answered. "Because this is a land-based task force and constantly carrying tanks of water around is not efficient." Zaya closed her mouth.
"Allowed to speak freely, sir?" He nodded.
"Ok, first love the name, earth and fire great combination." The commander smiled. "Second, why me exactly, I have been with the united forces for a year at most." She gulped, commander Luton was large, had a grimace on his face whenever he was disappointed, and had a reputation of demoting his personal.
He chuckled. "Simple, miss Zaya. This is a test from your uncle." Zaya looked confused and then her mind broke trying to understand this. "Your uncle, the Fire Lord? The brother of your mother? The man who helped found the united forces? The ruler of The Fire nation? You didn't know this?" The commander actually sounded concerned.
Zaya answered with a fire bender's default emotion: rage. "If I knew wouldn't have eaten trash after my mother died! Or attacked my great uncle because she stole my mother's hairpiece or melted "Zuzu" into his statue when I was eight while I was walking with my mother—" She held her mouth before she said more.
"Wow, I thought you were a spoiled brat, that was hidden away because your mother was a war criminal but that." He took a breath and released. "Really, trash?"
Zaya just looked at him. "I apologize for my outburst Commander Luton. I burned them so it wouldn't taste as bad." He nodded.
"Your second in command will be an earth bender and talented metal bender. Moo-Chee-Goo-Chee-La-Poo-Chee the fourth." Zaya took a long breath. "Sergeant Moo-Chee-Goo-Chee-La-Poo-Chee the fourth Please enter." A thin yet muscular man with dark hair entered the room. "Sergeant this is corporal Zaya, Corporal Zaya, Sergeant Moo-Chee-Goo-Chee-La-Poo-Chee the fourth. Try not to kill each other or else." He glared at causing both of them to gulp and left the room.
"Well, sergeant have you ever killed a man?" Zaya mentally "note to self: Never use code lines mom said to her informants about targets!" The sergeant gave her a neutral look.
"No, only broke a few bones, when I was in my rebellious phase. I know what you did and I know that you're a blue fire bender from your criminal records." Zaya was just questioning how she even was able to join the republic forces. "So do we start planning the training regiment?"
Zaya nodded. "After we meet the recruits and see their efficiency with their talents," Zaya spoke in a professional cold tone. The sergeant simply nodded. While Zaya was planing the formations of this division.
Zaya stood in front of the privates first class. "They all left the military academy with top marks they passed boot camp in a month."
Zaya smiled then saw the number of applicants. "A six-man task force and adding us it's eight. Once we start our training regiment we will be the most known unit in the united forces." Moo-Chee-Goo-Chee-La-Poo-Chee the fourth Gulped fearing the devilish grin she had. "Also may I just call you Mo or simply sergeant M?" The sergeant sighed with relief, he never understood how people could say his entire name, without taking a breath."
They went to training ground F. The unit stood in a row. Zaya stood in front of one. "Ok, Mr. Tuva master metal bender. Former occupation before the military academy—" She paused to read that fully. "Street statue performer?"
"YES MA'AM!" He yelled out.
Zaya chuckled. "Did you recycle metal paint?"
"Yes ma'am!" He was tense, but less loudly. Zaya didn't show weakness as her mother said: "show a leopard dog fear and it will rip your throat out."
"At ease." Zaya walked to the next member with blue eyes and a pale complexion.
"Miss Sanaa, Mother was from the northern water tribe, father an industrialist, went to the best school in republic city. Good marks in fire control, wasn't able to master lighting generation. We will change that." Sanaa gulped at that comment.
She walked to the next man dark-haired man with muscles to spare, that toward over Zaya. "The landslide, Professional earth rumble champion, won over three times and mid-level metal bender, was banned from the tournament because you can metal bend." Zaya saw something didn't add up. "Private First Class Landslide, At ease. how did you afford the academy?"
He cleared his voice. "Through my winnings ma'am." She nodded.
"Good and for the rest of you, none of that "ma'am", makes me feel old." She wrote it down on the file. "Ask if he met the mud queen." Next to it was a crude drawing of toph being angry.
The brown-eyed man smiled at her, he had a goatee with a mustache. "Mr. Aki, Burned down a forest, destroyed a raider camp during a burning hot summer day, and set his commanding officers hair on fire."He smirked, chuckling to himself. "Just a warning, my mother used to set my hair on fire, so I know how to put out hair fire." His smirk disappeared as he realized this commanding officer was more insane than him.
"Miss Jumin, Private first class, formerly in disease control, squadron." She then had flashes of her mother. "What was your main duty?"
She hesitated for a moment. "Burning, clothes mostly." Zaya nodded.
Then the final recruit, a Black-haired man with tanned skin. "Private Baatar, master metal bender, and private first class." He nodded. "You were part of the metal police force and then you were fired after..." She slowly read out the file. "Punching your superior officer to save a fire ferret from being trampled." Zaya sighed. "What a waste of energy."
"good sergeant Mo and I will start your exercise which is a game of dodge!" He stomped creating two pillars and then punching rough pieces toward them. The landslide blocked it with an earth wall which everyone hid behind. "You just need to not get hit for an hour."
Temujin laughed. "How? Tuva, landslide, and Baatar will just keep guarding us!" Zaya took one step forward creating a fireball, she started her moving fingers toward her palm compressing the fire until it was a small white pearl. "Try everything you can you won't beat us!" She moved the compressed fire on to her finger. It expanded to the size of a baseball and launched it at the wall destroying it.
Mo launched multiple earth circles hitting each of them, while Zaya was and sweating from using so much energy for that one attack. "First! The defense can be great, to regroup and to regain your footing." Sergeant M said disappointed. "Second this was supposed to be a fun exercise so should have moved around, third never underestimate your opponents, and finally don't place all the work on one strategy."
Tuva sighed. "Say that to corporal Zaya, she didn't do anything," Zaya smirked which caused all the members of the unit's skin to crawl. She created a fireball and then compressed it into a pearl fire and launched it at Tuva who dodged it. They all heard, felt, and smelled the explosion even if their backs faced it.
"You're all are part of a blade and you're all dull, I will sharpen you until you can cut through stone." All of them gulped. "We will meet at 0600."
