Chapter 17 a Ugly Secrets

When Iggy awoke after the operation, he sensed swaying, much like the rocking of a boat on an ocean. He attempted to move his hand, but both arms were strapped down along his sides. He opened his eyes and saw the narrow walls of what appeared to be the inside of an ambulance. He groaned and turned his head.

Right beside him there was another gurney. And no one other than Baine lied on it, staring back at him, deathly pale, with graying shadows around his eyes. His mouth was as dry as sandpaper. Starving. It reminded Iggy of his own thirst, but how could he bother with that, now? He swallowed hard and mustered the power to ask, “are you... real?”

Baine dipped his chin. “He spared me.”

Iggy wanted to cry, oh so much, but he was dehydrated and empty. His tongue clicked in his mouth as he said, “it’s better to find out someone is alive, than to find out that they’re dead.”

Baine wiggled his arm away from his own gurney to Iggy’s and grasped his hand. “I know.”
