Travelling On Important Business

The relief she felt when she saw her landlord at the door was almost debilitating. For a long moment she had thought it was another Englishman.

But now that she knew it was Jay, her relief gave way to surprise and suspicion.

“Jay,” she said, “what are you doing here?”

“I am in South Carolina to sort out some business. Thought I’d drop by to announce myself.”

“Oh. Really?” she asked warily.

“Yes, really.”

She looked at him a moment longer and opened the door.

“Would you like to come in?”

She noticed a Bentley similar to the one he owned, parked in the driveway, behind Danny’s car.

“I don’t want to interrupt your evening, so I won’t stay long,” he told her, declining the butler’s offer to take his jacket.

Karen didn’t do the courteous and insist that he wasn’t intruding. She just led him to the room where Danny and Bobby were seated.

“Guys, this is Lord Ravenscar –”

“Karen,” Jay interjected.
