With the flickering torch lighting the way, Kalann crawled through the passage. The tunnel had begun sloping sharply now, reaching further and further down into the bowels of the earth. The peaty smell of the walls was becoming oppressive, like being choked by smoke from an earthen fire. Judging by Laura's heavy breathing behind him, she was feeling the same.
Further ahead, the ceiling leveled out. The passage continued to slope, though, opening the space between the roof and the ground. Eventually, there was enough room for Kalann and Laura to walk upright.
"Thank the spirits," Laura groaned, stretching her arms. "If I stayed in that cramped space much longer, I might've gone insane."
The torchlight cast sinister shadows across the walls, and Kalann shivered. "Let's not talk about going insane. I just hope we find what we're looking for soon."
No sooner had he said that the passage split ahead of them, dividing into three separate tunnels sloping ever downwards.
