At long last, Kalann and Laura reached the end of the tunnel. An iron door stood in their path, but this one had a handle and wasn't locked. Kalann extinguished the torch against the wall; he wouldn't need it in there. A sinister red glow seeping under the door suggested enough ambient light to see by.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Ready," Laura responded.
Kalann grasped the iron handle and pulled. With a harsh groan, the door swung inward, spilling the eerie light into the corridor. Kalann pulled himself through and stared at what lay beyond.
The door was part of a great stone wall that formed one edge of a gargantuan cavern, so large that Kalann couldn't see any other end. The light came from a thick layer of glowing red mist hanging high in the air, as if it was the cavern's roof. The ground was like an arid plain; cracked, dusty, and low to the ground, scattered with boulders. Kalann might as well have stepped outside and seen the sky burned crimson.
