Chapter 43: Welcome to Wethelnar

The Urts were mistaken.

Xaran could hear them outside, rushing forward blindly in a great chaotic scuffle. Fresh blood was nearby, and they were determined to taste it. He could almost reach out and taste their target's fear. Yet he presence of the amulet was drawing steadily closer. The Urts were pursuing the wrong prey.

If there was anger at his army's stupidity, Xaran decided not to feel it. After all, that only meant Kalann Sefu would be delivered to him even sooner.

He gave a small, primitive breath. Makuran had turned from him. Crast was compromised. Their other ally was still hidden. And here was the hero, marching right to the conqueror's doorstep. The climax, it seemed, was fast approaching. A scenario straight from the oldest tales and epics.

Only this time, Xaran swore, there would be no happy ending.
