Chapter 14: The Care of Dumb Beasts

Shortly before South Hall descended into inconceivable brutality, Vekaya was walking toward the library, again. She had looked at her right knee many times that day before study hours. It was obvious what she had wanted herself to see: a scar, perhaps one that she had made, that pointed to the right. Something was hidden, something that that mark would direct her to see. But one thing she had learned about the House of Civius was that you had to wait.

She waited all through her first class. She waited all through her second. She waited through lunch. That day, she had a third class that she had to wait through. The day after she had found the note, she had walked as fast as she could without running to the library. There had been another child sitting at the table where she needed to sit.
