The dark blue of night became the pale blue of dawn, and smoke from nearby fires dotted the horizon to the east. There were fires – did that mean that there were people, or was it something else? How far had the devastation reached? Caedrus and I, drained by our own terror and the flight from the town, were waiting for something to signal that it was time to get out of the tree. Eventually, the signal came in the form of a man on horseback, galloping through the fields. I called out to him, and Caedrus began yelling as well. Before long, he was looking up into the tree at us.
“You're a smart couple of young ones, aren't you?” said a voice that verged on cheery.
For a moment, my tired, frightened brain forgot where I was. As I started trying to stand, I realized that I there was nothing below my feet, and as my weight shifted, I nearly fell from the tree.
