Chapter 19: Into the House of Civius

I related Caedrus’ and my tale to Captain Taron, who nodded, repeated things, and had no visible reaction when I told him about the villagers attacking each other. When I concluded my story with our meeting with Klovit, he looked at Rone.

“The dispatch that came in from the Carrowind,” he said. “Does anyone else know about it? Is there anyone I can ask, other than this man Fellius?”

“I don’t know. I don’t think so. I don’t even know where he went afterwards. He may have gone back into the Carrowind, or he may have gone somewhere else,” I said.

“Hmmm,” said Captain Taron, staring at his knuckles. “I can’t tell you how much it irks me that someone was in the Carrowind, and that I don’t know who they were or why they were there.”

I stared at him. If he didn’t know, and he was in charge of quite a few more men, who was the sergeant in South Hall? Why did he know?

“There’s nothing else?” said Captain Taron.

“Nothing.”
