Chapter 16: Doubling Down

“All right,” Nick continued. His breath was coming in gulps, “I know that there’s tons that I don’t know-”

“More than tons,” interrupted Beau, “petatons. Galaxies.”

“Petatons that I don’t know,” said Nick, “but I get the feeling that if you were going to let me die somewhere today that would have happened already. So that says to me that you’re the good guys.”

“One of us is,” said Julie, “the other has a lot of trouble understanding that giving up completely and drinking yourself to death is, in essence, picking a side.”

Beau didn’t take the bait – whatever it was. He turned down an alley, and Connard, Julie, and Nick followed. There was a door there that Beau opened.

“There aren't any bars here,” said Nick. “This place isn't even zoned for it, I don't think.”

“I’ll tell you more about all of this in a second,” said Julie, “but we need to go with him. We’re in real danger. What he just told me...”

Her voice trailed off.
