Chapter 36: Institutionalized Candor

There was a knock at Nick’s door. The door that, like Sarah’s, did not lock. He had been awake but trying, hope against hope, to return to an episode of sleep that would end with him waking up in his normal life. It didn’t.

“Good morning Mr. Assencio,” came a voice from the other side of the door. “My name is Dr. Anthony Humboldt. I apologize for not having met with you upon entry, but I thought it prudent to give a full night’s rest before we spoke. May I come in?”

“I’m decent,” said Nick, regretting the difference between the formality in his tone and that of the man on the other side of the door, but only for a moment. “Yeah, come in.”
