Chapter 23: Gift
That Saturday, I was watching TV while thinking about my gift for Stephen.
Mom was reading a book while Dad was out fishing with Andy at some private pond along with his workmates.
My other brothers headed to different places, so I guess I was left alone with mom. Perfect chance to ask for anything.
“Hey, mom,” I greeted.
“You’re not going out?” She looked up from her book entitled Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. I never thought that my mother would still read romance novels until this day.
“Um, mom. Could I ask for money? I’m buying a present.” I bit my fingernails.
“Hmm, first, stop biting your nails.” She placed her book down. “I thought Elaine’s birthday was on summer and Christine’s was done last September. For whom is this present?”
“For Stephen. A good friend,” I said.
“Just a good friend?” She repeated what I just said.
“Mom, whatever it was that my brothers told you, it isn’t true,” I said, rolling my eyes.
