Chapter 16: Seeing the Lily King

They caught up with David and the girls and went into the Throne Room. The colonnades of pillars that Evans had constructed now let in light but once it would have been pitch dark, lit only by torches. A strange room. What king would have kept council in such a dark, mysterious little room where the only furniture was an amazing high-backed gothic-looking 'throne' with its hollowed out seating area and a series of low stone benches that ran around the walls? At the time of the final destruction of the Palace a religious ritual seemed to be taking place, they said. Had the priests been praying to the Great Mother Goddess to save them?

David remembered his father saying the box-like benches in there may have held snakes. That interested the German girls who shuddered and gave little screams at the mere thought.

'The priestesses used to drape themselves in snakes,' David said, 'how d'you fancy that, Brigit? You could start a new fashion.'
