A Goodbye Letter

Liliana

It had been over 30 minutes of waiting, very impatiently if I might add and I was still yet to see the doctor.

He was just few steps away, few more minutes more and I was going to badge right in.

While I was going through this torture, Tam was waiting in the car. She had refused to come in because she hated hospitals and decided to use the time to find out more about our dead driver.

I couldn't wait to have the baby in my arms, she was all I had left of my sister and presently, the dawn in this very very bleak period.

I knew I couldn't keep her but I wanted to hold her at least, and feel like I was holding my sister again.

Finally, the door opened and an elderly woman stepped out, she turned and waved to the doctor who was now leaning on the door frame. With a smile and a wave of his hand, the woman was off padding down the hallway.

I looked up at him and immediately recognised him, I had seen him that very day.

"Miss.....?" He asked, ushering me into his office.

"Miss Rebecca Williams" I replied, taking a seat.

I had to stop myself from staring because he was really something to stare at. Boy was he handsome and that face... whoa.

The normal me would have wanted a piece of that action but nothing was normal since Vi.....

His hair was blond and curly, reaching to his shoulders and he looked partly Italian.

My eyes drew down to his lips and lingered there for a bit, before moving down to his neck, then to his broad shoulders and to his chest.

I couldn't see the whole of his body because he was sitting behind his desk but I could just imagine.

His well define abs were not hidden at all and all I wanted to do was touch them.

Yup, definitely the kinda body I would happily bang all night, and the nights after. Probably days too...

Wow! It had just been two weeks, two weeks without sex and I was freaking starved.

His muscles flexed and suddenly, a hand appeared in front of my face, bringing me out of my reverie.

"You were staring at me, like I am a delicious meal on your plate, waiting to be devoured" he said, amusement in his eyes. "You...have something on your face, right here...." His hand went to the corner of his mouth and my eyes widened.

My hand immediate flew to the corner of my mouth, praying to all the gods that there wasn't a drool there but when I touched my face I found it still perfect, no drool, not even sweat.

"Ha ha, very funny" I said, looking back at the doctor, only to see him staring at me with the most dangerous and mischievous smirk I had seen in a while.

Uh... uh... Liliana you're in trouble, another heart you are gonna have to break if you decide to pursue this.

"I was just messing with you. Now, down to why you are here...." he said, straightening his face though I could still see that glint of amusement in his eyes.

"You know, I am not really the baby's doctor as my specialty is not in pediatrics, but I am the doctor in charge of her. You know why that is?" I shook my head and he continued.

"...because I'm a close friend of the family. More like the family's doctor. You do know where I'm going, right?"

"No, I do not". I lied, maintaining eye contact. I did know where he was going.

"Who are you?" He asked.

"Doctor...." I quickly glanced at the name plate on the desk. It said Liam...

"Davis, I have no idea what you mean but I'm on speed dial for the baby and I got a call yesterday that she is ready to be discharged. What do I have to sign so that I can bring her home with me? You need to see some identification right? Here...." I reached into my wallet and retrieved the I.d card that had Becca's name but my picture.

"Very well done Miss Rebecca but drop the charade. You are not Rebecca Williams and in fact, I have the real Rebecca Williams on speed dial so are you going to tell me who you really are and why you want the baby?" he asked, his brows creasing with seriousness.

I was hoping this plan would fly but I had missed the jackpot on this one.

I thought posing as Becca would make it work perfectly but no, he just had to be the fucking family doctor.

I needed to get out of this somehow, the truth was never supposed to be an option but here I was, thinking about it.

He leaned back into his chair and from the corner of my eyes, I could see him just looking at me, probably waiting for the next lie that would come out of my mouth.

"Maybe I should just call security" he said, his hand reaching for the phone though I could see the hesitation in his hand.

"That wouldn't be a good idea doctor". I said and it certainly wouldn't have been but I knew he wouldn't have, I could see it.

"Okay, patient-doctor confidentiality? I asked, blinking my eyes playfully and trying to look cute but I was anything but that.

Last I checked, you weren't my patient, Miss whoever you are" he said, his eyes glinting with amusement again.

"Ahhh!!!" I screamed. "I think my shoulder hurts. No, it definitely does." I fake cried, making him laugh.

His laugh was so rich and deep that my heart thumped.

'What is happening to me?' I wondered.

"Alright, you've got me" he said, drawing a finger over his lips "My lips are sealed so spill".

I took deep breaths then said, "Okay, my name is Liliana and the baby is my niece. I am Victoria's sister and before she-- um-- before she--

"Passed" he offered.

"Yes that, she told me to take care of her baby. Though, not just the baby but since the other one has decided to go AWOL, guess I'm left with just the baby".

He looked at me intently, scrutinizing me, waiting for me to say more but I didn't.

"So why all the secrecy and why did you pose as Rebecca". He asked, brows furrowed like he was thinking.

"I am afraid, I'm not at liberty to say doctor. I know that it is impossible to just walk in here and request that the baby be released to me, without some sort of validation but I assure you that all I said is true and it is of great importance that I take her with me soon" I said, almost sounding desperate.

I had told myself over and over again that I couldn't keep her, yet the thought of giving her to some stranger irked me. I wasn't sure I would be able to do it.

"Why soon?" He asked. "What's the rush?"

"Now you are crossing your line doctor". I said, my face slowly breaking into a slow smile for a second, before becoming serious again.

"I understand that you are sceptical, especially since I wasn't named as any of Victoria's emergency contact or on any of the records..." I started, watching his every move. He reached into his drawer and fiddled with something. "...but I am sure that you do know the baby's father does not want her, I'll be damned before I let her go into the system. I'm taking her". I finished.

Not saying a word, he bent down the left side of his desk and opened a drawer. Few seconds later, he straightened back up with a paper in his hand which he place in front of me with a pen.

I was taken aback when I read the words -'Discharge Form' boldly written at the top of the paper. Just like that?

My surprise must have been really glaring because he smiled and said, "You really need to see the look on your face. Why so surprised? Didn't expect me to yield this easily?"

His question was doing something to me, I didn't know why. For some reason, the word 'yield' had stirred up something in me. I mean, was it just me or did it sound almost intimate.

"The reason I can discharge the baby to your care is because you are in fact listed as one of the baby's emergency contact". He said, drawing my attention back to the matter at hand.

"What? How?" I couldn't believe that I was indeed listed, I didn't think that it was even an option considering I didn't exist anymore and also my history with Mike. He just never would have allowed it.

"Vi specifically insisted that you be listed". He said then leaned forward.

"Under what name?" I was curious to know.

"The document simply stated 'Liliana, my sister'. She didn't give a last name".

"Mike let this happen?" I probed further and he answered, relaxing back in his chair. He was in no hurry to end our conversation, I could see.

"He really didn't have any other option because he had no idea. Something had pushed her to do it and she wouldn't say. Moreover, as is the procedure, I had to inform him that his daughter was due for discharge and if he didn't come for her, she would have to be released into the care if a next of kin. Sadly, his exact reply was, I really don't care, I'm too busy mourning the love of my life that I killed".

I could see the sadness in his eyes and I could tell that his relationship with Mike was more than that of friendship. They were more like brothers and Vi's death affected him just as much.

"So I am really free to take her?" I asked, still surprised.

"Yes and if you hadn't come for her, the next person that would have automatically gotten custody of her would have been--"

"Do not mention any of her grandparent. I'd rather abandon her in a ditch somewhere than let any them touch her". I said warningly. I was freaking serious.

My choice of words must have shocked him because he looked taken aback.

"Calm down" he said, raising his hands in defense. "I meant me. The only other person that can take her asides from you, is me".

Now it was my turn to be shocked. "Why you?"

"Does that really matter? The most important thing is that you are here now". He said, tapping the form which I was still yet to fill and sign.

Silence filled the room as I filled out the form and signed in the places I was to sign. I could feel his eyes on me, he was watching me, making me slightly uncomfortable.

I hated being watched, in my line of business, it was certainly not a good thing.

The only thing that made it not so bad was that there was no bad vibe. It was like an attraction.

I finished with the form and handed it over to him, then he too signed in some places and afterwards, he pushed the paper to the side.

Looking back up, he smiled and said, "She is now yours to take, as soon I process the document".

"Thank you" I said, and was about to stand when he said...

"I'll tell you this because you are her sister", he started. "For some reason she thought it best to ensure her child had whom to go to if anything happened. I wasn't sure why. We were very close and shared a lot but on that matter, she was very secretive. Even about you, she never really shared any personal or revealing detail but she still talked about you to a point. She even showed me a picture of you once, though, a younger version of you". He paused, then continued again.

"You might not have been involved in your sister's life but I can assure you that she thought of you everyday".

"I don't understand Doctor--"

"Liam. Call me Liam" he said.

"Yes Liam, what exactly do you mean" I asked.

"When Victoria and Mike first discovered they were pregnant, she lay there, before Mike could join her from the office, and cried". He said, pointing at the examination table.

"She was sad that her sister, friend and the person she trusted more that any other person, would not be there for her first pregnancy" he said, his mood turning solemn.

"You are her big sister and she looked up to you. You were everything she ever wanted to be, brave, strong and not bound by expectations. You were the realisation of a dream she could never achieve, except for one aspect, though she didn't say.

I knew the aspect she was talking about, she hated what I did and always said it wasn't who I was and that I was much better.

"She said all that?" I asked, feeling wetness on my pants. I looked down and saw wet droplets, then I touched my face and felt it wet with tears.

I was crying? I hadn't noticed. It was like I was reading a goodbye letter from her. My heart broke all over again and the tears came rushing out, like I had been holding in so much.

As I cried, I wondered again why it had to be her? Why no one else but her?

He reached forward and handed me his handkerchief which I collected and dabbed my face with.

"Yes she did though, she didn't tell me how gorgeous you are". he said, trying to lighten up the mood. I couldn't help but smile...

"I knew you were checking me out--" The door suddenly opened and Tam came in.

"Hello Doctor" she said to Liam and flipped him an imaginary hat, barely giving him a glance and turned to me. She was such a character.

"Hey girl, sorry to interrupt but--" she glanced at him again and did a double take.

"Whoa, you are mad handsome.... You can be my doctor anytime" she winked at him then at me and I shook my head and laughed. Tam was never one to watch her words, the line from her brain to her mouth was a free flow. Up there she thought and down her mouth it came out, it had put her in trouble many times now.

"Just a minute Liam" I said and stood up to go out with Tam but he stopped me.

"No please, stay here and talk. I'll go process this" he said, waving the discharge paper.

He stood up and walked around his table to the door, our eyes taking in and savouring every inch of his body. Just like I thought, his body was a killer.

The door clicked shut and we turned to each other and gave off a 'whew'.

"Tell me you are gonna bang that" Tam said.

"Tam, this is so not the time" I said, trying to ignore the feeling I got just from the thought of having sex with him.

"True, sorry...but I can tell he wants you too" She said, unrelenting.

"Shut up. Now weren't you here to tell me something?" I asked.

"Oh shoot... Yeah, just wanted to give you a heads up, Your brother in-law just pulled up few minutes ago". She said.

Just as she finished talking, the door opened and both Liam and Mike walked in. Mike looked sad and completely worn out like he hadn't slept in days.

I felt sorry for him, for the both if us and just wanted to reach out and comfort him somehow, but then his eyes met mine and in an instant, he went from sad and tired to pissed off and broody.

"Liam, what is she doing here" he asked, not taking his eyes off me.

Liam opened his mouth to speak but I shook my head at him. I wanted to handle this myself.

"Hello Mike, how have you been?" I asked sarcastically. "Back from your trip?" I asked, air quoting the word trip. His eye twitched, he was getting angry and I didn't give a fuck.

"I asked what you are doing here." He said again and this time, he addressed me directly. Good.

"Well if you must know, I came to take my niece home. I have signed the documents so she is now mine to take".

Mike turned to Liam, probably wondering how it was even possible.

"It's true Mike, your daughter is now in her custody" Liam said.

Mike turned back to me, his eyes narrowing.

"Over my dead body!"
