For our job to work, we have to blend perfectly into our environment. In that way, our targets, the demon skin, could not spot as right away the moment their eyes landed on the likes of me.
After all, the last thing that a hunter wanted to happen was for their prey to be able to single them out amongst the sea of crowd, and that applied to us, demon slayers, as well.
By the way, demon skins pertained to those creatures of the lower realm that managed to latch to a mortal body and eventually snatched the body out from its host.
Anyway, as I am saying, when I woke up, what I did, first thing in the morning was to check my phone. In fact, I was expecting that my new prospective recruit would try to contact me and to my surprise, she did indeed try to get in touch with me!
"What could possibly have happened for her to give me a call when I clearly told her last time we met that I am not available every Tuesday past nine? I just hope it is not an emergency."
I found myself wishing against the odds while I was trying to access the voicemail that she left for me. Because if it turned out that the girl was attacked by a demon skin last night and she ended up losing her life in the process, it would be such a big loss on our part! Because we could definitely have some great use for a good talent like her. After all, no seers nor faes alike have yet to possess the power to see past through our enemies' disguise. As far as I am concern, she was the first and if I am not mistaken, her name was Cassie.
However, when I started listening to her message, I ended up bolting straight up from where I was lying.
"The possessed guy, he came after me. My friend ran him over and he is dead."
I heard Cassie's voice on the other line saying that and with just that news alone cold shiver started running down my spine especially when the moment I heard the panic in her voice.
"Where are you?"
She added afterward and I could swear I heard a hint of annoyance from the tone of her voice when she asked that. But then she let out an exasperated sigh as if a sudden realization dawned on her.
"Oh yeah, I remember it is Tuesday; chipotle night. That explains why."
I subconsciously nodded my head upon hearing her thoughts. It was a good thing that she remembered. At least she would not end up blaming me on my face once we met. But then, when I heard her next words, I was frozen on the spot and for some reason, my heart almost skipped a bit.
"Call me."
That was all she said before the voicemail came to an end.
