He gave me second thoughts

~~~ Cassie's POV~~~~
I am not sure if it was just my wild imagination, but for a split second, I swear that I saw Jared's expression turn a little cold as soon as I mentioned that a demon was inside my friend.
It was as if a dark thought came to him out of nowhere. However, the weird expression which he wore on his face did not last longer than a second and it was gone just as soon as it appeared. He replaced it with a nonchalant look.
This, on the other hand, left me wondering what could be going on inside his head as we speak?
It could not be that he was starting to have cold feet and was chickening out, right?
Oh, dear! Please, no...
He was the only person I knew who could help me with this problem.
Ana was the only friend I've got. However, she was also the same person who needed help the most right now.
This only meant that I basically have no one else to run to but Jared. He was my last resort.
That was why when he talked to me and the tone of his voice sounded a little bit condescending, I tried not to pay it any heed.
Instead, I focused my attention on what he was trying to explain to me. It turned out that Ana got possessed after checking the man she happened to hit on the road.
This man who attacked me at my work was possessed and she accidentally ran over him with her car when the other party chased after me.
Oblivious to the demon's ability to switch to a fresh host, she approached the dead body and that was how she had fallen victim to the possession.
Jared said that this mishap could have been avoided if the said person only underwent a proper ritual to exorcise the demon out of its body before dying.
"So how do we get this demon off my friend?"
I inquired with all my earnestness because I wanted him to dispel my confusion. His reply, on the other hand, came short and brief.
"You have to perform an exorcism."
He declared with a casual shrug as though what he suggested for me to perform was as easy as pie. He made it seem as if exorcism was the most normal thing to do.
Well, I guess, it was, at least for him.
"What about Ana? What would happen to her?"
Of course, I would not want any harm to befall my friend. That was why I tried to make things sure first before doing anything. Yet, the answer he gave me afterward did not sound convincing, to me, at the least.
"Well, yeah... Err.. she should be fine."
Jared did not even bother hiding it. He looked as if he was not sure of what he just said. As a result, it made me feel skeptical towards the idea that he proposed. So I squinted my eyes in suspicion and looked at him dead in the eye. I stared at him as sharp as I could.
"Will she be okay?!"
I asked for the last time but it was as if he was not taking me seriously at all.
"Do it right and she would be fine."
He insinuated first before adding,
"Knock on the wood..."
Then he deliberately knocked his knuckles right on top of the table and when he realized that he was knocking at a laminate, he snickered to himself.
"Oops! Oh no, my bad. I think this one is a laminate."
I heard him click his tongue as he said this. I had no idea whether he was fooling around or not, but his extremely half-hearted response made me think that this person had yet to comprehend the severity of the situation.
However, I knew well enough that there was a life at stake here. The more we delay getting things done, the worse the situation becomes. I chose to refrain from making a blatant comment or calling out the other party for his insensitivity.
I decided not to point out the fact that his indifference regarding the matter at hand made me doubt his skills because the last thing that I wanted to happen right now was to get into an argument with him; not because I was afraid of confronting him but because I knew that we did not have time to waste.
As such, before our topic could drift somewhere else, I brought the matter about exorcism backed to the discussion.
"What does an exorcism involve?"
This time, I saw that my question made him surprise. He was visibly startled. But this state did not persist long and he recovered his composure in a blink of an eye.
