Chapter 82: A second reunion

I didn't know how much time had passed before I was forced into a carriage. It had the royal family's emblem on it. I was back home. Truly. It was real, and not some dream I concocted.

I was strangely upset about it.

Like I was coming back to reality after a really long vacation.

It had been four months in the real world, and only a few weeks in the corridor.

The Pegasys-- because of course the royal family didn't do mere horses-- flew swiftly, expertly through the night. I didn't know how long the ride was going to take, so I settled in, attempting to get comfortable.

Cyanide was nowhere to be found, and I was livid over it.

I can't believe they'd take my child away from me!

Sure, I took him first, but he was this little egg, all alone! What was I supposed to do, leave him there? By itself?! He could never!

The night sky was beautiful, at least, and soon I found myself drifting back to sleep...

Aphrite was there when I woke. Sitting across from me in the flying carriage like it was an everyday occurrence.

"I have missed you, goddess chosen."

The glare came before I could stop it. I guess my eyes were filled with so much rage, that the goddess was visibly taken aback. She blinked, and I'd never seen her blink in the eight years we've been in each other's lives.

"What do you want?"

"I... I am sorry you were subjected to the corridor, goddess chosen. It was out of my control. You did the unthinkable and went against nature when you brought back Sheri Von Graves."

My heart skipped a beat.

Sheri... was alive.

The goddess just confirmed it.

"Oh my god..." I muttered, covering my mouth. My eyes burned as I met her gold ones with my green. "Sheri's alive? My mom," I choked. "She's- she's really alive? It worked?"

"Yes."

Oh.

That meant...

That meant I could bring back Drake.

That changed everything.

"I would have gotten you out sooner," she continued, "however, the corridor is not my domain. I have little power or influence there."

That explained the lack of visits lately.

"So, I'll ask again. What do you want?"

She paused. "I suppose I am here to check on you."

Like she truly cared? for me? for anyone in this world she created?

"I want my dragon back."

"I suppose it is futile to tell you that he has a mother?"

"I want my dragon back."

"I see. Well. I can try."

It's silent.

Then, "I killed someone."

"I know."

"Does that make me a bad person?"

"His kind don't... die in the way yours does. He'll be fine someday. It'll take several years for him to heal, but he will. You... kill a piece of him. He'll be back. You'll see."

That didn't answer my question.

"What you killed... was not human."

"Like that matters."

"It does."

I don't thank her, and we spend the rest of the ride in silence.
