AWAKENING OF THE NIGHT

"Erika." Bae Soo-Mi and I called.

She opens the bathroom door, without noticing the big hole on the floor, we both fell.

It wasn't until long as they were awakened by storm clouds horning in from the south - west. Lightning dancing in forks on the horizon, thunder grumbling like an awakening beast, all were introducing the figure they were all looking at now, a Minotaur.

"So man no fit sleep." Idris said.

"What did you say man?" Prithvi asked.

"Sorry it's Nigerian Pidgin, so we cannot sleep, that's what it means."

"It sucks." Wong Kar Mun blurted.

Wong Kar Mun started looking around, wondering if she would find any sign of their escape.

"There's a cave over there." She pointed across the sea.

As they swam the thirty feet to the bottom, they arrived at the cave which appeared to be more of a conglomeration of rocks rather than a solid mass.

"You can use this." Wong Kar Mun said, giving Prithvi a knife.

"I planned to use this on that thing that attacked us earlier in the house, just see it helps."

"Sure." Prithvi said.

He began probing at the crevices in the wall, it didn't take too long till he probed a deeper pocket between rocks, he kept probing with the knife.

They went inside as they saw a bunch of items. Paul stuffed a flashlight into his pocket and gripped a pistol in both hands, while the others picked up guns and other stuffs.

Suddenly The Minotaur walked in, the sound of his footsteps alerted them as they began shooting.

They shoot round after round in the thing's direction. A hole pierced its stomach. Another bullet knocked the skull from the body. The skull tumbled backwards, the body fell forward and was still.

More creatures walked into the cave, Annabella sighted one of them at Prince's back.

"Prince... At your back." She shouted.

He turned and threw a punch at its eye. Annabella aimed at it and pulled the trigger.

Her gun then clicks. "Shit! Clip's empty. Keep that light on them while I reload." She reloaded quickly and fired off seven rounds into the thing. But it refused to die and still advanced on them.

Prithvi and Paul were firing off rounds at those that came up from the cove. The air reeked of gunpowder.

The Minotaur that they taught was dead, stood up and began walking towards them.

"So dem no fit die bi dat." Idris said.

(Translated:So they cannot die at all)

Wong Kar Mun shouts, "Speak english."

Suddenly something hit Idris in the left shoulder. He felt a searing pain and blood splattered his face.

The Minotaur draws the scythe back into the darkness for another swing.

Idris acted reflexively. He dived at the thing's legs and brought it down in a tackle on the floor. The action sent pain ripping through his wounded shoulder. He tried to ignore the pain and continued to grapple with The Minotaur on the floor, desperately not wanting it to get another chance to swing its malicious weapon.

Idris fought his way up his body and pinned his arm to the floor.

The Minotaur heaved upwards with tremendous strength and flung Idris onto the floor.

His eyes adjusting to the darkness, Idris saw the scythe raised up above him. It dropped. He rolled to one side. The scythe swung again. Idris rolled the other way, felt it graze his side as it severed through his shirt and embedded itself into the floor.

Idris fumbled for his gun and fired at it whilst a continuous barrage of shots were still fired by the others.

The scythe crashed into the floor again, Idris grabbed the handle at the junction of the blade. He figured if he hung onto it, The Minotaur couldn't swing it.

The Minotaur tugged on the scythe, hurling Idris to his feet. Idris used the momentum to slam the blade into The Minotaur's jaw.

He heard bone snap and felt a tooth hit him in the face. The Minotaur fell backwards onto the floor.

He saw the others running off and followed after them.

Trees surrounding the cemetery danced in the languid breeze of the mild night.

"Micheal, look." Bae Soo-Mi pointed at the grave that had Erika's name on it with her flashlight. "She's dead."

"And you guys might be the next". A dead girl whispered.

My head swung in slow - motion as if through quicksand, moving in the direction of Erika's grave, blood rushing in my ears and my heart beating thick and heavy in my chest.

Bae Soo-Mi's hair and freckles stood out like measles, her flashlight dropped to the floor.

Something was building, raising up as if underwater, rushing to the surface.

Erika's hand connected with my face. My teeth slammed into my tongue and the taste of blood filled my mouth.

I leaned over and a drop of blood hung tremendously on my bottom lip, falling to the grave like a black gem.

The ground rushed towards my face and I threw my hands out to brace my fall, fingers biting into damp earth.

A clawed hand broke through the ground like a spear through flesh.

Searching, it grasped my wrist, the bones pressing in a vise - like grip that captured my breath, the intense coldness of the grave lingering on its dead flesh.

The head of the corpse broke free of the ground, its shadowed gaze meeting mine, I pulled out of the grip.

I scuttled backward, standing up, swaying, overcome with fear.

The corpse moved with purpose, pacing me as it used the undisturbed ground to leverage itself as another drop of my blood fell and landed with a dull plop on the corpse's forehead.
