CHAPTER 18

Conflict

As Andropov had ordered before the separation in groups, the three contingents met again in the mouth of the cave. Everyone noticed the absence of Saiegh, but only Darcy dared to ask about him.

“ Unfortunately he had an accident. I could do nothing for him.” Was the Commander´s terse reply who immediately changed the subject considering it closed. “Did you find anything?”

The responses were negative. The heads of the other two search groups explained how far they had gone, so the Russian said.

“Neither had I found anything. That means one of three things: either we have to go through each one of the side tunnels, or the treasure is beyond the inner lake and we must return to this cave with boats, or simply there´s nothing here.” He remained was thoughtful for a minute and then said.

“We cannot stay here much longer. Those who escaped will return, possibly with the military police and must not find us. Let´s prepare the withdrawal.”
