Amalric also faintly heard the shots and told his companions.

“I think that they came from the mouth of the cave. We are farther away than we thought.”

“Well.” Replied Emil. “Luckily we are walking in the opposite direction, so as to put the maximum possible distance between these criminals and us.”

“ The shadows are growing quickly.” Added Marcelo. “We´ll soon have to light the only flashlight that works yet, and not for long.”

The road had a downward course with an intricate tangle of trees and shrubs, rocks and fallen logs that turned difficult each step. Teresa marched silently, stoically enduring the effort. Marcelo, who constantly blamed himself for allowing his pregnant woman to get involved in so much hardship, carried her at times when she had to overcome an obstacle, which was doubly tiresome for the young man. All marched in silence to save breath and allow maximum concentration on the terrain.
