Selma walked around the perimeter of the lagoon, in a growing nervousness. The other expedition members were also expectant and a bit alarmed for the delay of Martín but they tried to control their anxiety so as not to mortify the young woman even more. In a moment the girl emitted a series of sobs and finally a scream. Dennis tugged on the rope that had been tied around Martín's waist to maintain physical contact with him and realized desperately that the rope was loose and could be picked up effortlessly; when they reached its end the travelers could see that it was frayed.

“The rope is cut, probably by the friction against the rock.” Mused Dennis in contained voice. The despair began to invade the companions of the absent youth.

"I should never have let him get into that dark pit." added Dennis in a plaintive voice.
