Chapter 22

Bodniev led the group as he entered what appeared to be a kind of indentation in the rock on the hillside. A little while later they found that it was not a cave or cavern, but rather a long narrow gorge between two very high stone walls, walls that perhaps had formed in different geological movements, although it could not be ruled out that it had originally it was a single rock eroded by some watercourse along past eras that would have excavated that curious groove.

The gorge had curves and meanders, and at times was no more than a meter wide, forcing walkers to slide carefully; Since the height was forty or more meters, the sky above their heads was very narrow and let in little light, but at that moment it had the advantage that almost no rain fell inside, and the water that entered rolled down the walls to the rocky soil, and then driven by the decline flowed into the valley behind it not wetting the walkers.
