Once again Bodniev led the way; both he and Jack carried flashlights with which illuminated not only the path ahead but also the walls and ceiling, in anticipation of possible marks of unnatural origin; their footsteps echoed in the tunnel and they refrained from speaking to give preferential attention to sounds coming from inside the mountain.
