Immediate danger

After much digging and trying to piece all the clues together, Max and Jack finally discovered the link, which was the nurse at the hospital where Olivia had been staying. They had questioned everyone that had been in contact with Harold and Olivia, as well as the people they knew were connected to the two of them, and this person stood out. She was someone who could barely be called a witness but was the last person to see Olivia and some asking around revealed that the nurse herself was having some personal circumstances making her more susceptible to manipulation. Especially a master manipulator like Olivia.

So, they told the officers in charge of the hit and run that Laila had been involved in, what they had found. In turn for their help and cooperation, one of the detectives allowed them to join as he went to speak to the nurse in question based on the evidence they had gathered. On the way to the hospital Max and Jack told the detective about what they had heard from the other nurses. Explaining how the regular nurses had been unable to take care of Olivia's room one day, so they had a newbie address her wounds. Even though it was just for one day, that one day had brought Olivia into contact with someone they wouldn't have normally monitored and someone who hadn't been fully drilled in the ways of taking care of a convicted person or suspect awaiting trial. Although they deserve the same level of healthcare as everyone else, certain other privileges do not apply.

"To top it all off, she had been going through a rough patch with her boyfriend. Apparently she had been telling her colleagues about how she was worried about him cheating and how they had been fighting. Coincidentally Olivia had been hanging up some sob story about a supposed boyfriend she apparently has. She had told all the nurses that had been taking care of her about him and how she was worried. She was asking them for a phone call. And although all the regulars knew better, they couldn't 100% certainly say the same for the newbie. So, this might be that potential gap in her security that we were looking for."

The detective nodded in agreement and said, "Yes, I think so too. Good work you guys. Let's see what she has to say and if she has indeed given Olivia her phone at any moment during her stay at the hospital. If so, I need to know which phone and get a warrant to get her phone records. Who knows if Olivia had been smart enough to cover her tracks and delete the number she has called or stupid enough not to."

Max and Jack agreed with this course of action and hoped that they had indeed found the right crack in the wall that was the security around Olivia and Harold. The sooner they found the crack, the sooner they could find the person responsible and bring them to justice.

Meanwhile at the hospital Laila's surgery had finished. Fortunately her pregnancy had been far enough along and baby Dominick was a strong little champ, allowing both mother and child to survive. Laila was lucky that she had been sitting on the opposite side of where the car had been hit, since broadside collisions have a much higher chance of the baby getting seriously hurt depending on the speed of the cars. But although she had been on the 'right' side of the car, that did not mean she hadn't gotten hurt. She had suffered some internal and some external injuries and their main priority was to stop the bleeding and keep her blood pressure high enough for blood to reach the baby.

When the light above the operating room went out and the doors opened, the doctor, seeing the worried faces of Noah, Maria and Steve, immediately smiled to reassure them that the surgery had gone well and that at least for now everything was alright. The three of them immediately got up from their seats and walked towards the doctor, while he walked towards them as well. Once they were standing face to face, the doctor began explaining Laila's condition. He didn't waste a single second since the first thing he was greeted by, was a flood of their questions asking him 'Is she okay?' 'Will my wife be alright?' 'What about the baby? Is the baby okay?'.

"To answer all of your most pressing question, yes. Both the mother and child are out of immediate danger. We managed to stop the bleeding and get her blood pressure back to normal. The baby's heartbeat is still sounding healthy and strong. So, for now things are no longer life threatening, but they will be required to stay a few days in the hospital for observation. These kind of accidents are associated with uterine contractions and tenderness. In order to prevent a possible premature birth, we need to see how her body will react to the accident during the next couple of days. If everything appears normal and your wife feels well, you can take her home for the remainder of her recovery."

All three of them let out a sigh of relief before thanking the doctor profusely and asking when they could see her. Although they needed to be patient for a bit longer, at least they could now relax a bit and make some calls to Laila's parents and his own to let them know of the situation. Noah didn't dare to call them before at least being able to tell them that Laila had made it through surgery.
