A Twist of Fate

"Hello Amber, you have to finish this work at the end of today just so you know."

"But Boss I do..."

"Ah, ah, ah, no buts in my company, you'll finish it today understood."

"... Sigh, yea understood I'll finish it today."

It wasn't the first time that she was forced to work overtime and even though normally she wouldn't really mind, since she doesn't have any plans, today was special. She had booked a flight for this night, to Oklahoma City where her grandparents live given the fact that she wanted to visit them again after so long. Just for this occasion, she used up all her remaining vacation days that amount to a week. Luckily when she booked her flight, she predicted that something like this might happen and therefore took the flight five hours later.

"Sigh, I hate this life, only work all day long, six days a week and as soon I come home I'm so exhausted that I immediately fall asleep, what am I even working so hard for? Sigh... I wish I could live an adventurous life like the stories my granddad used to tell me. The hero who goes on an adventure with his companions to defeat the demon king, they sleep outside, travel the world and go through thick and thin together. Sigh" Her thoughts wandered away while the sighing was clearly audible to everyone around her.

"Well, for now, nothing I can change so let's get this done asap so that I don't miss my flight."

She tied her normally open dark brown hair, which was a bit longer than shoulder length, to a ponytail. With her hands, she straightened the folds in her business dress and started again to clatter on the keyboard in front of her, an extra-strong coffee already ready at the immediate reach of her hands. The normally dark green eyes were nearly shining in contrast to the eye bags from all the sleepless overnights in the office. Her whole body felt heavy and sore from all the sitting, especially her chest was dragging her down with every second, making her shoulders stiff.

It was around nine PM when she finally left the office in a hast toward her car, making the high heels click with every step she took. She bought herself a nice Jeep-like car with the saved up money, a few years ago, hoping to go on a camping trip one day, which sadly never happened. Reminding her of all the trips she could go with it right now, she sighed again and started the motor.

"I need to hurry I only have about an hour until my plane starts."

With squealing tires, she drove out of the garage at full speed towards the airport. Wisely she already put the suitcase she needed for the trip in the trunk, knowing that her boss would be an absolute dickhead. The roaring engine echoed on the streets as she drove with exceedingly high speed towards her destination. Raindrops started to fall on her windscreen hindering the already bad vision in the pitch-black night. Suddenly a human silhouette jumped out from the nearby alley in front of her car, blinded by the headlights it stayed still in the middle of the street. Startled by the sudden appearance she made a full emergency brake but it was already too late, with a loud crash she crashed into it.

"Oh god, please not now. Oh no no no no dammit please be alright." She quickly opened the door and ran to the front of the car.

"Sir... Sir are you alright? Can you hear me?"

In front of her was lying a young men, probably one or three years older than her. He had small sky-blue eyes and a snub nose on his face. The light brown hair had the standard military cut, short on the sides and a bit longer on the upper side. A pendant with what seemed to be a rather distorted figure which rested on his chest immediately caught her eyes since it was a rather unusual ornament.

"Can you hear me, are you alright, please answer me?" She grabbed his shoulders and slightly shook him.

"D... do... don't bring me to the ho... cough hospital they'll kill me."

"What, did you just say that someone is trying to kill you! What are you talking about? What am I gonna do? Ok, Amber calm down let's think. If someone is trying to kill you I better call the police"

She already put out her phone and was about to make a call when he suddenly spoke again.

"No! Don't they are all corrupt, please don't..." His voice gradually became quieter as his consciousness slowly fainted.
