Just Keep Being Mad

The first day back after Christmas vacation is always depressing. Everybody shuffles around as if the world just ended, students and teachers alike. Everyone is quiet when I walk through the front doors. It’s not quiet right, though. Instead of being sad and tired, they’re quiet but lively. I notice the glances thrown towards me as I make my way down the halls. Anytime I catch someone’s eye they look away, and not subtly. The halls are filled with the dull roar of murmuring. There’s new gossip. That’s the only time this school is quiet when they’re excited. “Good thing Charlie got out when he did. Poor guy.” I overhear as I pass by a large group of guys. They notice me standing behind them and shuffle down the hall.

Shit.
