Wave was never a good example of what a person should be in their life. Underneath the cover of his warm blanket, he continued to softly snore while ignoring the pinging sound that indicated his sister attempting to call him to her office.
It had been a couple months since the death of his father, and while his mother and sister had eventually come to terms with his departure and moved on; Wave was still depressed as he allowed himself to rot in his room aboard the Onyxia.
The Abyss was gone, all that remained was the Ocean of Memories left behind. He didn't want to stay in the underworld as his mother often voiced her worries, so to avoid her he had decided to hole himself up in his room on the Onyxia.
He let out a soft sneeze. Perhaps his sister was badmouthing him again because he had decided to continue ignoring her calls for the past few weeks. Normally she would have forced her way into his room, but he had barfed up a wall of anguished souls to block the door.
Now if only he could break the damn alarm that keeps on ringing. Despite his demi-god physique, he didn't have any advantages in physical strength. His body was basically as strong as a regular human, maybe a bit more. So he couldn't destroy the installment on the wall with his hands unless he used his warframe suit. Unfortunately after his pip-boy was destroyed, he didn't have 24/7 access to Onyx anymore.
*RING RING RING sfx* The alarm seemed to get louder all of a sudden as it pierced through the pillow on the side of his head.
"Tsk." Wave clicked his tongue as he slowly got up with crusty eyes. He glared at the reinforced installment on the wall feeling vexed. Then all of a sudden an invisible lightbulb lit up over him.
Walking over to the device, he kept his ears covered while continuing his advance. Reaching the god-forsaken thing, he reached his finger to the back of his mouth and barfed out anguished souls sticking them to the walls, letting them wail out over the ringing.
'Heh, the cries of the damned sound so much better than that insane ringing.' He thought to himself with a smirk as the sound of the alarm disappeared, replaced by the cries of sinners. He decided to make his way to the restroom.
Reaching the restroom he relieved himself of his daily issues but when he made to flush he discovered a problem, his toilet wasn't working.
"Uggghhh." He groaned as he made to check what was wrong with it. Unfortunately for him, as a waste of inhuman space; he had no idea how to fix anything.
"Welp." He shrugged it off and made his way to the sink. Turning the handle whilst expecting the familiar sound of running water to come pouring down, he froze; nothing was happening.
"Well... that explains the toilet." he murmered.
'Great, looks like Amber decided to cut off my running water.' He frowned as he knew there was no way that the Onyxia would have plumbing problems with Onyx maintaining it.
It was obvious to him that his sister was attempting to force him out of his room to answer her calls. However in spite and irritation, he stayed resolute in shutting himself in his room. He had supplied himself with a one year supply of instant noodles... wait how was he supposed to eat them without hot water?
Realizing this he visibly trembled, but decided to remain stubborn and stay in his room regardless. He could eat the dry noodles. He survived in the Abyss without oxygen, food or water for years. He refused to submit to her schemes! Returning to his smelly yet well kept room, he sighed.
'Well, at least I still have the internet.' He thought to himself as he made his way to his bed to do what he's been doing every day. Watch anime, read light novels/fanfics, and occasionally leave music on with his earphones while he continued to nap with his face underneath a pillow. But first things first, masturbate. He kicked off his boxers, laid down with his laptop on top of a wooden board on his chest, propped his head on 2 pillows and prepared to relax.
That is until the power cut off along with his internet.
"NOOOOOOOO!!!" he yelled for the first time in awhile and panicked. Obviously his sister was pulling out all the stops. Realizing how serious his sister had become, he reluctantly admitted defeat.
With a sigh he moved to the door that was barricaded by a mass of squirming souls and stared at it for a moment before opening his mouth, he sucked them in like a monstrous vacuum.
He stared at the door for a moment before resolutely reaching to open it. He hadn't been outside in a couple months, so he was a bit nervous. With a heavy heart, he slid the door open and stepped into the hallway bathing in rays of light from the window that was facing the sun.
"Wave!? Mate where are your clothes!?" Oh that's right, he forgot to put on clothes.
∞
After putting on some clothes, Wave finally made his way to his sister's office.
"Well, look who finally decided to visit. You're a little late." Amber said as she was seated with her legs kicked up on the desk, letting her blue hair down on the side. The 'X's of her eyes seemed to have turned purple, indicating the pleasure she was taking from being able to force him out of his room.
[Master Wave. It brings me great joy to see you out and about again!] Onyx said as party streamers were popped out.
"You cut off the internet." Wave growled ignoring Onyx and opted to glare at his sister with irritatingly crusty eyes. He wasn't able to wash his face either as the water was cut off in his room.
"Well someone's grumpy. No greetings or compliments to your beautiful sister?" She smirked, completely unphased by his anger.
"Oh, you think you're sooo cute." he continued glaring
"Bitch, I'm adorable." She retorted
"Enough narcissism. What do you want." He said getting straight to the point.
"For you to stop sulking in your room. Honestly, mom is getting worried." She rolled her eyes. She wouldn't have minded letting him rot in his room for another few months but Ereshkigal had been very vocal about her worries concerning Wave. "Really, you've been stuck in the abyss for the majority of your life, now you're holing yourself in another place. Is it just habit at this point?"
Wave didn't respond, instead he just continued to silently glare at her. It lasted for a moment until his eyes shifted down, the light in his eyes vanished again along with his anger. Wave never noticed it, but he had a dead expression these days as if to reflect how empty he felt inside. Amber noticed it and clicked her tongue as it looked like she failed to get him riled up.
Realizing that she wasn't getting anywhere, she decided to be blunt. "Dad wouldn't want you to grieve over his death."
"WELL WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO!?" Like the flick of a switch, the light returned to Wave's eyes as he lashed out in anger. His chest heaving in and out, his teeth were clenched tight and an overwhelming aura of death seemed to exude from him.
"To move on." she responded calmly, unmoved by the feeling of death.
"Easy for you to say, you never got along with dad to begin with!" he accused.
Amber was silent for a moment, her eyes flashed for a moment but she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. instead of responding she removed a small book attached to her belt and allowed it to grow in size. Pages flew out of the book, hovering around the room in a circular formation.
Wave widened his eyes as an image of his father appeared in the room.
"Amber, we need to talk." The memory began.
∞
Months ago.
"Amber, we need to talk." Hessian spoke as he stared into his daughter's eyes with a somber yet resolved expression.
"What, is this about how I'm siphoning energy off Wave for magecraft?" She asked a bit blandly, although she was a bit put off by his unusual expression.
He shook his head. "No. If anything I'm impressed by that, but that is not why I am here." He walked past her and looked out into the view for a moment before speaking.
"Five years ago, I sealed off your divinity, blood and spiritual energy from your soul. I did this because I was afraid that you were emulating me too much." He stated before turning to her again. "Perhaps you never understood my fears, which lead to your resentment of me. But I only did it because I care about you."
"Oh yeah, father of the year magically crippling his own daughter and leaving her to fend for herself. How very caring." She retorted sarcastically with an eyeroll. "You know the amount of times I almost died the past year without any powers? Oh I'm sure you do, how was watching me fend for my life? I'm sure you got a kick off of watching that."
"If you were ever in any real danger, I would have stepped in." He smiled as he did find enjoyment in watching her battles. "As I'm sure you realize by now, I'm not exactly a good role model."
"Overpowered god who's literally immortal." She pointed out.
"And that is something anyone can reach, but you should not go down the same path I have. Neither my goal nor my path should be admired, much less emulated."
"I once reached the apex, only to find that it was only the beginning. I found the answer towards the peak, yet I was only greeted with another question. To seek the answer." He sighed "The search for such an answer turned into an obsession..."
"Just because you failed, doesn't mean I will." She frowned, but he merely shook his head.
"I do not fear the possibility of your failure. I fear that you, like all others will lose themselves in the pursuit for the answer." He spoke slowly as if he wanted to allow his words to sink in.
"So what if I lose myself? I'll still be me in the end." She said with confidence
He nodded before asking "Perhaps you will. But who else will be around you?"
"In the past I also had a daughter you know. I truly loved her with all of my heart."He stopped for a moment as if to remember something. It was only a moment before he continued. "She was the first one I cut down when I began that path towards The End." he stated with pain clear in his voice much to her shock.
"I won't be like that..." She said after a moment, more to herself than him.
"Who's to say? The erased history of those who had tried say differently. Tell me, will you also cut down your brother and mother?"
"No!" she immediately responded.
He shook his head with a sigh. "There is no point in what you believe you will or will not do at this moment. Once you believe you have found your own path towards the answer, you will walk down it until it The End." Hessian knew that it doesn't matter what one believes will or will not happen. Everything can change in just a single moment.
"I speak not from just my own experience, but the experience of hundreds of others who had also tried. Which is why I became afraid when you began to emulate me so much. I truly tried to block off your path, to save you from the despair and pain." His tone was of sorrow, as if he truly didn't want her to experience what he had.
The two were silent for a moment. Each in their own thoughts.
"However I realize that it was wrong of me to do that."He said much to her surprise. "Amber, perhaps you can be different from all others who have tried. I cannot say I truly know for sure. But I believe it's time for me to stop holding you back."
He reached out his fingers towards her temples. All of a sudden she found herself incapable of movement. Deep within, a click sounded out as if something was unlocked. She widened her eyes as from within her body and soul, she could feel her power returning.
"Amber. No matter what path you choose in the future, know that I will always love you." Hessian said with a smile filled with love.
∞
The memory faded away returning the room back to it's natural state.
Wave stared at the spot that his father occupied in the memory in silence. His fists trembling as they were clenched tightly. The words 'Know that I will always love you' echoing in his mind again as he thought back to his father's last moments.
Breaking the silence Amber decided to continue. "Anyway I'm sending you to school."
"What? Why?" He asked confused
"To get you out of your room. Plus you could learn to socialize with others. Make some friends, I don't know." She shrugged. The idea sounded a lot better when she was discussing it with Onyx earlier.
"You're sending a depressed guy to some shitty school. I feel like it's more likely that I'd kill everyone by the end of the first week." Wave said as he looked at her, completely unimpressed.
"Maybe you will, tell you what. If you can get through one year without failing or killing everyone, you can come back. Plus it'll be like one of those schools from some anime or games that you watch." Amber said, attempting to get him excited.
Wave was still unimpressed. He really didn't see the point of this.
"Alright, incase you end up hating it, I'll pick one from some doomed timeline so that you can have something to smile about when you come back. Our company actually uses doomed timelines of other realities to harvest materials, so when the world is about to end, we reap the benefits and leave." She began to explain a bit while going on a tangent. Noticing that Wave still wasn't responding, she coughed and brought up her a screen from her belt.
"Let's see, doomed realities... high schools.... No wait this is an all girl's school, I'll just look for one where it's not... and done. You're registered to some place called Senba High School in a city called Nagazora." She finalized as Wave wondered why it sounded familiar to him.
[Opening up portal to Nagazora.] Onyx said as a portal opened up beside the desk.
"Anyway, since your old pip-boy was destroyed, I made you a new one-" She began to take out a new pip boy as Wave's old one was destroyed however he cut her off.
"Don't need or want it. Pick me up in a year." Wave grumbled, stepping through the portal.
"...Did he just leave without letting me explaining where he's supposed to live?" she asked out loud.
[Do not worry Master Amber. I have faith that Master Wave can take care of himself just fine.]
"He didn't take any weapons or a way to communicate with me." she pointed out.
[I doubt he will need them. He is going to a school after all.] Onyx reminded. You shouldn't need to be armed in school.
"I guess you have a point. Alright, set a reminder for me to pick him up in a year."
∞
"Where the fuck am I!?" Wave yelled out, completely unsure of where to go.
And that was how Wave started out his year in the Honkai-verse
