Chapter 24: The Mind Reader

The next morning, I woke with a banging headache. I felt like I had been run over by a bus. Sitting up in bed, I wondered what had happened the night before, but the details were fuzzy. Stepping into the bathroom, I vigorously brushed my teeth willing myself to recall why I felt so weak.

Then, mid-rinse, the memory hit. I could communicate with the boys without actually speaking. The dangers Vazar warned me about were slowly taking shape, but I couldn’t understand how it could happen so soon in our relationship. Racing back to my bedroom, I dialled Vazar’s number from my phone.

“Hey, good morning baby.” He sounded pleasantly surprised to hear from me. It was our first phone call after all.

“Hi, good morning! How are you?” I said breathlessly.

“Have you been out running? You sound out of breath.”

“Yes, I ran back to my bedroom! Something happened last night, and I need your opinion.”

“What? What happened? Are you okay?” His voice broke with concern.
