Chapter 22: The First Step

That night, I tossed and turned. The nightmares wouldn’t allow me to sleep peacefully. I dreamt about being a fugitive, on the run with Vazar and being chased by unseen shadows that hounded us. I woke up at 5am, covered in sweat and breathing hard. It felt so real. My arms prickled with goosebumps and I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep again.

Deciding to take advantage of the bathroom being empty at this time, I pulled myself out of bed and went to get ready for the day ahead.

At breakfast, I thought it wise to approach the topic of marriage with my parents and see what they thought of the situation.

“Good morning Mama,” I greeted her as soon as she walked into the kitchen.

She was surprised to see me up so early, dressed and ready for school. “Why are you up so early?”

“I couldn’t sleep. I guess I must have been tired from my first shift at work last night.”

“Hmm. Did you make tea?”

I poured her a cup and sat down opposite her.

“Mama, has there been any news on Fatima?”
