Chapter 36: Dressed for Success

The next morning I find that wedding plans are fully underway. The spot next to me was empty when I woke up, so I quickly showered and changed to seek out my husband-to-be. Carl greets me at the door and leads me downstairs into the chaos. I am immediately bombarded by a short plump woman in her mid-fourties with brownish red hair.

“The bride is here! Perfect, now we can get you fitted for your wedding dress. We may need to make alterations and of course I need to know who will be your maid of honor…” the robust woman keeps talking but I begin to tune her out. A sharp pain strikes my chest.

Rowena would have been my maid of honor.

I am jolted out of my depressive thoughts when the woman grabs me by the hand and drags me into the formal front room, which is empty. I welcome the silence but I crave solitude, not this woman I don’t know poking and prodding at me.

“I’m sorry, who are you?” I ask her, interrupting her babbling.
