Chapter 20: Escape

When Vyo entered the room, Halverson was lying on his cot with his face toward the wall. He sat up quickly; watching the door, knowing it remained unlocked.

"Hello Joshua."

"Vyo." He did not stand up. Vyo stopped in the middle of the room.

"I would have brought your tray, as usual, but they said you'd already had yours today."

"They brought me something they called food," he said, eying Vyo, trying to place the change in him.

"Times are hard. Many are going hungry -- I'm sorry about what happened. I didn't go to the Bratta. He came to me, that day, if that makes any difference."

It did. "That's OK I'm still here."

"Here." He pulled an orange out of his tunic and tossed it to him. Halverson set it down on the cot beside him. He placed the change then. This was no longer a boy. Somewhere Vyo had found the wisdom to be a man.

"Saddam Key thinks you're a spy for Andur."
