Chapter 12 - unlucky

Lin Xiao Yi immediately rushed to the restaurant where she worked by boarding the bus.  While on the bus, the girl continued to grumble in annoyance at Fang Yin for not waking her up.  In fact, let her be at home only with the little girl.

It's almost ten o'clock.  She was two hours late for the restaurant. Looked like she should be getting ready to be fired today.

"Why is my life so unlucky?" Lin Xiao Yi grunted with a snort.

Half an hour later she arrived at the Louwailou Restaurant.  With hasty steps, Lin Xiao Yi immediately entered the restaurant through the back door.  Luckily, Manager Wang wasn't in the kitchen.

"Fang Yin, why didn't you wake me up?" Lin Xiao Yi grumbled when she was in the kitchen with a sour face.

"Your sleep is like a dead person. I even woke you up for half an hour but you just asked me to go first," Fang Yin said while rolling her eyes.

"There's no way I said that. You must have heard wrong," Lin Xiao Yi said with furrowed brows.

"Of course, you won't be aware because you're still fast asleep. Even if a bomb explodes, I'm sure you won't know if you're dead," Fang Yin sneered with a snort.  Remembering how Lin Xiao Yi was very difficult to wake up even after shaking the sofa.

"What's all this fuss?" Manager Wang exclaimed right behind them, causing Lin Xiao Yi to jump.

"Nothing, sir," Lin Xiao Yi said as she scratched her head on the back.

"Xiao Yi, I know you just came. But I will forgive you because someone ordered your Peking Duck. Cook it with excellent taste and don't be careless if you don't want to be fired," Manager Wang threatened, who never messed his words.

"Alright, sir. After all, I never cook carelessly," Lin Xiao Yi said with her head bowed.

"It's good then because I don't want to pay for a chef who can't cook," Manager Wang said and then stepped out of the kitchen.

Lin Xiao Yi was grateful that she didn't get fired.  Maybe today the Goddess of Fortuna was still on her side.

All chefs were busy with their own cooking utensils.  The sound of kitchen utensils sounded quite loud when they touched each other.  Yet the atmosphere was familiar to sound and was no surprise to the people who worked at the restaurant.  They must be skillful in cooking every meal to be served.

Lin Xiao Yi did her job according to manager Wang's orders to make Peking Duck.

Peking duck was famous as a dish for Chinese kings.  But now anyone can eat it.  Made with duck meat soaked in a liquid chili seasoning called gochujang for 24 hours.

After draining for 6 hours, then the duck was roasted until it has a brownish color.  When served, Peking duck was very delicious when mixed with sweet and sour sauce.

Lin Xiao Yi bit her lower lip because the food was not yet cooked due to being late into the grill.  There was no way a diner would bear to wait nearly an hour.

"Xiao Yi, why is it taking so long? The person who ordered is impatient," Manager Wang grumbled, who was already standing behind Xiao Yi.

Lin Xiao Yi was holding a knife that jumped in shock until it her his index finger.  The knife was sharp enough that it immediately scratched the skin.

"Manager Wang, you startled me," Lin Xiao Yi grumbled while blowing her bleeding index finger.

"Don't be spoiled. It's also your fault for coming late. Now you are taking too long to cook it. Don't let you disappoint him," Manager Wang said without feeling guilty at all.

"It won't ripen for long," Lin Xiao Yi said.

"Okay, I'll be there in fifteen minutes," Manager Wang said and then left the kitchen again.

"Ugh, you annoying," Lin Xiao Yi cursed then put her finger on the faucet to remove the dripping blood.

"Xiao Yi, what's wrong with you?" Fang Yin said who saw her friend grimacing in pain.

"Manager Wang startled me when I was holding the knife."  Lin Xiao Yi immediately dried her hands with a tissue and then covered the wound with a plaster so it wouldn't sting when exposed to water or chilies.

"Then how about the duck? Is it cooked?" Fang Yin asked.

"It'll be ready soon. Hopefully the diner won't get bored of waiting." Lin Xiao Yi let out a deep breath while looking at the wall.  It shouldn't be long before the duck cooked.

"Surely they will wait because your cooking is very good," Fang Yin said as she raised her thumbs.

Louwailou Restaurant was a five-star restaurant that has been proven by its quite delicious and fresh food.  Only cooked when a visitor arrived.  So they had to wait patiently.

"Xiao Yi, are you finished yet?" Manager Wang asked, who had come back looking impatient.

"I just finished it. Fang Yin, I'm done," Lin Xiao Yi called, who asked Fang Yin who delivered the food.

Fang Yin and Lin Xiao Yi had different jobs.  Xiao Yi was the chef, while Fang Yin was the waiter.

"Wait, who said if Fang Yin will deliver. Xiao Yi, you have to deliver it," Manager Wang said when Fang Yin was about to lift the tray.

"Why me? Just tell him if I have a lot of things to do," Lin Xiao Yi said.  During the year working there, it was the first time a visitor had asked her to deliver food.

"Don't ask too many questions and protest. Now take it to table 15," Manager Wang ordered.

Lin Xiao Yi let out a deep breath, felt the irritation surging through her heart.

The girl immediately went to table 15 which was a VIP table that had its own room.  Separated from other visitors.

"Please enjoy, sir," Lin Xiao Yi said as she put the food on the table with her head bowed.

 "Thank you," the man said.

"Hi, Auntie," Mei-Yin said with flickering eyelids.

Lin Xiao Yi then raised her head when she heard a familiar voice.  Her eyes were immediately rounded perfectly when she saw a man and a child who was now sitting in front of her.
