They're Not Here

      "This isn't right," Mason hissed through the darkness. "This isn't right. They should be here! She should be here!"

      "Mace, just calm down," Jamie said seriously. "The men are getting something lit so we can have a torch. Once we can see in here, we can look for any clues about what might have happened."

      Mason didn't reply. He sat with his knees pulled up close to his chest and pressed his palms over his eyes. Ilona was supposed to be here. She was supposed to be safe. What if Pierce Vane had done something to her after all? Maybe if Mason had hurried back after they'd pushed the second dragon over the cliff, he could have saved her.

      He heard something then and when he lowered his hands from his eyes; they were met with a bright light. He blinked the world into focus and saw Jamie had returned with the torch he had mentioned. The younger man looked pale and worried, but he was trying not to panic, either.
