Chapter 18

Sitting awkwardly on the sofa in his huge house, I feed Miracle. It's a good thing I grabbed his milk and bottle. The only thing I forgot are the nappies.

It's just past ten. I am sure the local corner store will be open.

My phone suddenly rings and I glance at the screen.

"Rina, what's up?" I ask.

"I should be the one asking. Why on earth did Seb call me to ask about you? Did something happen between you guys?" She asks. Rina is always the messenger between us when we argue.

I huff loudly whilst trying to balance the phone between my shoulder and ear as I feed Miracle the milk.

"You know his temper. He got angry at me and I left." I explain.

"You just up and left?! With the baby? Where are you Eva? Are you safe? You're so stubborn too. Couldn't you have simply left the room until he has calmed down? Honestly, you two haven't changed." She sounds concerned.

"Rina, don't worry, Miracle and I are safe and sound. We're at Jason's place but please don't tell Seb. I am still mad at him for not hearing me out." I say truthfully.

"Jason? Are you talking about the Jason Carper you have been hanging around with recently?" Her voice sounds surprised.

"Yes." I say. "Why do you sound shocked?" I laugh.

"Were you living under a rock when we were in university Eva? He was a year below us and he was known for his outstanding looks."

"Hold up, even you know him Rina? Seb said he knew him for years too. Was I the only one who didn't?" I say in astonishment.

"You are really clueless Eva. Anyway, aren't you excited about staying over at his house?" She asks curiously.

"It's not a house Rina, it's a mansion." I explain, "You know why I couldn't come to yours right? I just want a breather and spend time away from Seb. If I came to yours he would find me and yell at me again."

"I know you don't want to talk about it, but I'm always here if you need me Eva." She says gently.

"I know, thank you Rina." I say gratefully.

My head turns towards the sound of footsteps and I see a smiling Jason walking towards me.

"Why are you so quiet?" Rina asks from the other side of the line.

"I have to go. Bye." I whisper quickly before hanging up. I stare at Jason. I don't have any recollection of him from my university days.

"Do you want to take a photo too?" Jason laughs and my face heats up.

"N-no. I was just thinking." I mutter in embarrassment.

"I've set up the guest room for you Eva. Miracle can sleep with you too. It might not be as neat since the housekeeper has already left for the day." He says.

I smile. "It's enough that you're letting me stay here. Don't sweat the small stuff." I say.

"I won't leave a woman to wander the streets alone at night, especially with a baby." Jason's voice is soft as he sits opposite me.

Placing a sleeping Miracle beside me, I gesture around, "What's the deal anyway? Are you some sort of secret Prince hiding away here from another country?"

His house is a four story mansion. No normal person would be living here alone and have a housekeeper too.

"It's nothing as exciting as that." He chuckles, "My family have their own wine company."

"Oh, so you're a gold spoon lad?" I muse. He did look like one when I first met him but didn't he say his designer jacket was from his own money? Why is he working if his family are rich?

"Sorry I hid it Eva. I didn't want to befriend you by introducing myself like that. I wanted to get to know you better with nothing coming between us. My family background has always created a barrier between other people and I. When they find out who I am, they usually want to be friends for the money. That's why I didn't want you to judge me by my wealth and family."

I smile gently and lean over to pat his shoulder, "Don't worry, I'm not angry at you. If I can't understand you, what kind of friend am I? So don't worry about me leaving you or having ulterior motives."

Jason smiles and my heart races as he places his big hand over mine which is on his shoulder, "What if I want you to have an ulterior motive?" His voice is deep as he speaks.

My eyes widen. "W-what are you saying?" I say in a fluster. Is he... flirting with me?!

"You heard me Eva." He grins and winks. My face is on fire and I quickly pull my hand off his shoulder.

Was it indeed a bad idea to come here?

"I-I'm tired. I'll go to sleep." I mumble quietly, picking Miracle up and avoiding eye contact with Jason.

"Follow me." He says and walks out of the room and up the stairs. I walk behind him, trying not to look at his face.

"Let me know if you need anything. The bathroom is inside the room." Jason explains.

I nod, staring down. I am still feeling shy about earlier.

"What's up?"

I gasp as he bends down and tilts his face, his blue eyes shining in front of me.

"W-what are you doing?" I ask in embarrassment.

"You have such cute reactions to my teasing Eva." Jason laughs and straightens up.

I scowl at him, "Stop teasing me. I'm going to sleep."

He laughs and holds up his hands, "Okay, okay. Have a good rest Eva."

"Jason." I say quietly as he reaches the door.

"What is it?" He lifts a brown eyebrow at me.

"Can you do me a favour please and buy me some nappies for Miracle? And thank you for letting me come here." I say softly.

He grins, "Anytime Eva. What are friends for right?"

I frown. Does he usually flirt with his friends?

My phone rings again and I glance at the caller ID before switching off my mobile phone.
