Chapter 41: Radioactive

Eli couldn’t move. He cradled his head in his hands, defeated. Mr. Carlysle was dead. This made no sense.

Mr. Carlysle couldn’t die like this. He was supposed to retire so he could spend more time with his grandkids. He was the kind of granddad that let his granddaughter paint his nails. He had done too much good and still had lot of left to do in the world.

“Eli.”

A hand touched his shoulder. He looked up and it was Savior.

“Dad.” His eyes were tearing up. “I’m so sorry. I tried and I failed him. I wasn’t fast enough-”

“I know. It’s not your fault.” His dad’s blue eyes were filled with understanding but it only made Eli feel guiltier. He took Mr. Carlylse into his arms, cradling him like a child. “I’ll take care of him now. Could you please stay with Eli, John?”

John had ran over from the train and saw the entire scene. He nodded to Savior, putting a comforting arm on Eli’s back. “Yes, Savior.”
