Chapter 41: The Journey Ends

Halfway through the fourth night Namate stopped them at a fork in the path. 'That way is your way.' He pointed to the fork on his right. 'This way is mine. When you get outside Bannock let the horses go. They will find their way back. My part of the arrangement is met, your part will be met when the horses return to our home.'

'I agree your part of our contract is concluded,' Walter said formally, and with that their guide nudged his horse and headed off.

'How odd,' Aliah murmured.

'It is their way,' Walter said. 'For them, this is solely a contract. They want no thanks and no part of our lives. They have no care but for their own community. Come, we need to get to the foot of the mountains before daybreak if our plan is to work.'
