Chapter 5

Vanessa's POV

"You SHUT YOUR MOUTH! And what are you even fighting for? I bet that's not even your car," he shot back, crossing his arms like he had just won an argument.

I scoffed, taking a step closer. "Yeah? Well, it's my friend's car, and—"

"Ahh, I see. So, you can't even afford one yourself? Had to borrow a friend's ride just to act rich?" He smirked, his grey eyes glinting with amusement.

WHAT THE—?!

"SO WHAT?" I snapped. "Where is this even going? Just pay for the damage and leave!"

"Pay? For that?" He pointed lazily at the scratch like it was a mere inconvenience. "Listen, I may have hit it, but at least this car is mine, not borrowed from a friend because I can't afford one."

I clenched my fists. This guy had some serious nerve.

Before I could yell at him, he casually lifted his hand to cover his ears. "First of all, stop screaming. Your voice is actual torture."

Oh. Oh, he did NOT just—

"Well, thanks for the compliment!" I said with a fake sweet smile. "Since my voice is such a pain, I'll say it softly this time—Sir, you should pay for the damages, and then we can both go our separate ways."

He mimicked my fake politeness, leaning in slightly. "Oh, really? Well, thank you for having mercy on my ears, but I still won't pay." A smug smirk played on his lips, and I swear my vision blurred with rage for a second.

I folded my arms. "Fine. Then call your parents and ask them to pay, because I am not leaving until you do."

At that, he laughed—laughed!—shaking his head like I was ridiculous. "I don't bother my parents for cheap cars like this," he said smoothly. "Even if I did, they could pay more than this whole thing's worth in seconds. My parents don't need to lend me a friend's car, unlike yours."

Kova, who had been quiet until now, let out a low whistle before stepping forward. "Yeah, they probably buy you everything, huh? Wouldn't want their jobless son embarrassing them by borrowing a friend's car."

I had to bite back a grin. Damn, Kova was good.

The guy's smirk faltered for a split second, but he quickly recovered. "Well, this just proves how desperate you both are for money. Let me guess—this was your plan all along? Scratch up a rich-looking car so you could scam the owner for cash?"

My breath hitched.

Excuse me, WHAT?

My brain blanked for a second as I just stared at him. Did he seriously just accuse me of scamming him?!

Oh, he was done for.

I scanned the area quickly, looking for anything I could use. My eyes landed on a construction toolbox a few feet away. Perfect.

I turned to Kova, gripping his arm tightly. "Kova, get in the car. The second I start running, start the engine. Do not stop for anything. Got it?"

Kova frowned. "Nessa, what are you—?"

"Just do it," I said, my voice firm.

Kova hesitated but nodded. I heard him walk away, the car door opening and shutting.

Now, it was go time.

I marched toward the construction site, fingers curling around a yellow screwdriver sticking out of the toolbox. My palms were sweaty, but I didn't care. This guy had pushed way past my limit.

As I turned back toward him, I saw him casually standing next to his car, scrolling on his phone. He had no idea what was coming.

I tightened my grip. You're gonna pay for what you said.

Taking a deep breath, I called out sweetly, "Hey, mister."

He looked up, and his smug face immediately shifted into one of confusion. Then, his eyes dropped to the screwdriver in my hand—and widened in horror.

"What the—?!" He stepped back. "What are you doing with that?"

I didn't answer. Instead, I raised the screwdriver—

—AND DRAGGED IT DOWN HIS CAR DOOR IN A LONG, DEEP SCRATCH.

A gasp erupted from the people around us.

His jaw dropped. "WHAT THE HELL—?!"

I didn't stop. I stabbed the screwdriver into the door again, making another massive scratch.

The moment I let go, I spun on my heel and bolted.

"KOVA, START THE CAR!" I screamed, my heart pounding in my chest.

"WHAT THE F@CK?!" the guy roared behind me. "COME BACK HERE, YOU PSYCHO!"

I risked a glance back—BIG MISTAKE.

He was chasing me.

And he was fast.

"KOVA, DRIVE!" I shrieked, flinging the car door open and throwing myself inside.

Kova slammed his foot on the gas just as the guy lunged forward.

We swerved onto the road, tires screeching as we sped away.

Through the open window, I heard him yell one last thing—

"YOU'RE GONNA PAY FOR THIS, YOU CRAZY B@TCH!"

I sat back in my seat, panting heavily. The only sound in the car was our ragged breathing.

Then, after a long pause, Kova let out a breathy laugh.

"Damn, Nessa," he muttered, shaking his head.

I grinned.

"That's what he gets."
