It was almost as if Theo and Klein switched lives while I was gone.


Theo was the one acting defeated and afraid. He didn’t adjust well when it became obvious his allstar status didn’t come with him when he went to college. He had to prove himself all over again. And now he was competing with players who were just as good as he was. He was no longer the standout, or the hard-luck story, since many, many kids came from lifestyle conditions as bad, if not worse, than his. My biggest fear when I put my plan in motion was that they were going to slip back into the roles they played before the three of us got involved. It never occurred to me that not having me there would upset the balance so badly that both their personalities would change.
